Blocking Windows Live

Hi Folks

I am just wondering if anyone know what ports i need to block to stop people using MSN, Yahoo etc on my home network.

Is it even possible??

I am using a netgear WGT624.

What i was planning to do was block the services.

Cheers

Re: Blocking Windows Live

Doesn't it use Port 80? Think you may haver trouble blocking it via ports, how about installing a firewall and doing it there?

According to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/240063, you need to block ports 1863 and 443 on your firewall for MSN. As for Yahoo messenger, well, that isn't affected by port blocking (MSN is specifically designed like it is so it is easy to block), as Yahoo just works on the first available port. You might try installing a software firewall (such as the free Kerio) and blocking access to the Yahoo Messenger EXE file.

Re: Blocking Windows Live

remember port 443 is for SSL too. so blocking it may cause you problems accessing secure web pages.

I do know you can block msn via the registry or group policy if you have access to all the machines on the LAN.

Re: Blocking Windows Live

Most users may try the following.

Xfire, AIM, ICQ, Skype, Googletalk..may be worth blocking those also....then again they may resort to email/chatrooms and Mirc...
