Re: [Merged] Show us your Desktop or Wallpaper

Yeah, KDE is prolly the slowest of the bunch (not that it's slow... it's just slower than the others), but I just can't seem to get on with the others.

Re: [Merged] Show us your Desktop or Wallpaper

I'm seriously considering pushing the winxp desktop aside and just plugging the laptop into the monitor instead.

Finding my linux setup is way more faster and productive than windows.
Running eclipse / evolution / thunderbird / firefox and the laptop is not even breaking into sweat

Think Cobby would beg to differ with you but for me personally I found both KDE and GNOME bloody HEAVY so went fluxbox.

However I got gdesklets running also which allow you to access the bits of gnome u like ie like running nautilus without loading desktop etc

Openbox is supposed to be good too and watch out for fluxubuntu or whatever its called.

LOL No wonder windoze users are heavily into overclocking : overclock this : buy this buy that - new faster harddrive - fastest dma setting etc etc etc

All in vain : It's like trying to put a jet rocket on a citron 2CV.

Rule 1 - Tune what you are running or get something better.

I have suffered to long with windows and now I'm free

None of my hardware is overclocked and Windows runs just fine. I don't want to use Linux for several reasons. It's my choice. I grew out of having to type commands to get anything working years ago. And I like to play games.

But if you like to use Linux, that's your choice.

Not really, more like trying to put a 2.0L engine in a 2CV. If you have the right skill it can be done but the cost of time and money would far outway the benefit. Ultimatley it would be far better to buy a car with a 2.0L engine as standard.
I think that is a better comparison

Re: [Merged] Show us your Desktop or Wallpaper

Yeah, I agree that for gaming, Linux still has a way to go (or at least developers need to wake up to the growing number of *nix users who would buy their products if available)... so for gamers the choice is either a console or Windows.

However Linux is, in my experience, faster than Windows... not sure if this is just because of ext3 versus NTFS.

The only area where my Windows box is more efficient than Linux is booting-up. Currently, using Sabayon Linux (Gentoo-based distro) takes about 60 seconds to be fully up 'n' running, whereas XP takes less than half.

Conversely, shutting down is the other way round. Takes twice or three times as long under Windows than Sabayon. Shame that I always seem to be rebooting my XP box whereas I only have to boot Sabayon once and it hardly ever needs rebooting.

utter tosh

Windows is convienient and if you had spent any time getting to know me then you know everything I do is to try and make my life easier. Ive tried Linux and it goes totally against my objectives. I support what I support because ive researched it and understand it a little ,Then when I have a 60+ year old first time pc user who needs my help I can offer it. I am all for an easy life. Im not gonna spend hours in terminal to set up a machine when I have fine tuned my job so I can do it in 90 minutes

It all comes down to what you're doing. Linux doesn't suit my needs, so I use Windows. I'm in the process of writing an application for a friends gaming centre, which uses all Windows PC's for the games, so Linux would not be of use to me there! lol

And unlike some Windows users, I don't have all manner of rubbish running in the background or starting when Windows does. I keep it maintained and it virtually never crashes. I can't remember when it last crashed, or needed to be rebooted (aside from when I install drivers or updates).

I also don't think that Linux is a good choice for home users, as they won't understand it. Some home users struggle to understand Windows so Linux would just totally confuse them. But, I agree that Linux is a good alternative to Windows if you're looking for something different.
