Re: dial up while goign abroad
Imo you would be better off taking a wireless adapter and hope you find a hotspot/unsecure wireless network

I assume you mean to connect to NTL ?
Regardless of the company, it's not very likely.
You may as well find a Wifi spot in a library or Internet café and use that.
you can log into your NTL E-mail account from abroad using your NTL account number and E-mail address.
See HERE

Re: dial up while goign abroad
What you mean like the old 1p a min lines we used to have here but local to that country ?
Main problem would likely be the mark up the hotel would charge on the calls, it used to be one of their favorite ways of making money

You would be entirely at the mercy of the hotel regarding the call cost, as bob_a_builder said, they often mark up calls & paying for an international call at hotel rates could cost you a lot of money.
far better to find an internet cafe & get email using webmail, or e.g. googlemail, in my opinion

Re: dial up while goign abroad
Sorry, didn't make it clear
The hotel had two pc's in the lobby which were on a Broadband connection, I used them nearly every day and had no problems at all. All the machines were setup in English so no trying to translate problems lol

I'm probably still traumatised from being on a cruise ship that wanted to charge £25 for 100 minutes

when you, presumeably didn't use it, they might as well have sold it much cheaper??
I actually found it a break to not have any net access, web or email, for a fortnight, it is ages since I read a whole book in less than a week
