Whats betters Pace or Samsung, and how do i get a samsung one?

Are they both the same? Sound, vision?

My old pace box from 1999/2000 (the one with the back card slot, died tuesday and an engineer came and fitted a new one which is the same but without the bank slot and more holes on the top of the box for venelation....

Bit disapointed about the 'new' box.... Buts its new none the less.

Ultimately you get whatever the engineer has on the van. Arguably the Samsung's are better than the Pace STBs, but primarily that was because the Samsungs had better support for broadband, something that is less relevant as no STB properly handles 10 meg broadband.

What betters Pace or Samsung ? just about everything on the market but NTL wont invest in them for the long term hence the old tech tvdrive.

ohh i see, you want a new box, should have asked the man in the van fitter/engineer for one.

The time will come when these boxes will be redundant.
You will in time be able to go to your local tesco and copy off a copy of a film thats just been released and play it at home, making the need for these boxes redundant.
I guess about 18 months time dvd rental shops will go to the wall, about a year later the cinemas.

People have been predicting the demise of cinema for years. I wouldn't get too worried yet.

Going to Tesco isn't much of a night out.

That's technically possible now. It hasn't happened, and, TBH, I don't think it ever will. TV screens (even large, hi-def plasmas) don't even BEGIN to compare with cinema screens. An example. I was watching "The Departed" last night at the Odeon Liecester Square. I was watching it on a screen that was (at a guess) around 60 ft diagonally, and listening to a sound system that cost nearly £100,000. Now, your average multiplex doesn't compare to that, but the picture and sound are still an awful lot more impressive than any home cinema system.

Re: Whats betters Pace or Samsung, and how do i get a samsung one?

your average mobile phones have far more RAM,CPU and GFX power than any of the NTL:tw STB's and thats a fact.

if infact the policy makers within NTL:tw were to stop messing about and just commission a 400mhz+ PPC SOC (system-on-chip) with a reasonable GFX card/chip (upgradable miniPCi slot) a working USB2/Firewire interface that the end user can use and perhaps even an 11g+ chip that can then use tcp/IP for generic wireless (HD)IPTV and such, then that would go a very long way to clear up the totally under speced STB problems we have seen time and again, and dont be silly with ram, just stick a 256meg+ stick in there....

it would also be wise to incude as standard in all future stb's and PC add-in cards to put a reprogramable PFGA chip that can be programed on the fly to take any and all codecs that might be used for the DVB feeds in the future, dont try and be clever and put a feature fixed codec chip in there to save short term money, its false economy as now, DONT DO IT.

DVD rental will be gone as it will be HDDVD or BLURAY rentals.
Pay per view vod has been a flop due to it not being priced cheaper as its only 1 day rental. and renting for as long as you like for a fixed monthly amount allready exsisst.

Pardon my ignorance, what would a box of this manufacture cost, and would ntl/Telewest have to start charging their customers for it?

Bugger all, i have crap PC's lying around allover, they're not exactly expensive to source parts for either. As essentially, that's all they would be.
