Server Error: 550, Error Number: 0x800CCC79

OK, this might be abit long.
I am having a problem with Outlook Express (OE) on XP SP2.
I can receive emails but cannot send any. I get the following error:
The message could not be sent because one of the recipients was rejected by the server. The rejected e-mail address was 'ADMIN EDIT - EMAIL ADDRESS REMOVED'. Subject 'Test from Steve Laptop with Dads email', Account: 'pop.ntlworld.com', Server: 'smtp.ntlworld.com', Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '550 relaying mail to gmail.com is not allowed', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 550, Error Number: 0x800CCC79
I have set up the email account in OE as per NTL website and still get the error.
I have deleted the accounts and reinstalled then and still the same error.
I have added the account to a fresh install of OE on a different PC and still get the same error.
I have ticked and unticked all the authentication boxes and still have problems but different errors along the lines of "does not support SSL" etc.
So in desperation I download and install Mozilla Thunderbird and configure the ntlworld email account and all works OK.
I can't work out what is wrong with OE and the help desk call with NTL has them saying the problem is at my end. Well this may be but what is it in OE that is causing the error.
Anyone got any thoughts.
Thanks in advance

I've been having a similar problem. If you have Norton Anti-Virus, try running LiveUpdate - it worked for me. The Email Scanner component was out of date. Possibly Norton is not configured for the Mozilla interface, so that's why it's getting through there?

ETA: Since it's gmail address though - maybe it can't be downloaded via pop3? ntl account expects an ntl email.

I'd take the email addy out unless you wanna get spam :S

Gmail does work over POP3 btw.

http://mail.google.com/support/bin/topic.py?topic=1555
http://mail.google.com/support/bin/a...273&topic=1555 to configure Gmail for POP access
http://mail.google.com/support/bin/a...276&topic=1555 to configure OE

Otherwise, because it uses SSL it needs to use pt 995 not the normal 110 for POP3.

As for sending, then you can't use Gmail SMTP, you have to use NTL's or whoever your ISP is, you cannot connect to an SMTP server away from your current network (prevents spamming).

So you need to use smtp.ntlworld.com on pt 25.

Re: Server Error: 550, Error Number: 0x800CCC79

If you check the message it tells you he was using smtp.ntlworld.com, port 25

I would guess the problem might be the address you had defined as your sender/return address, I believe this must be a valid ntlworld.com address to prevent spoofing - and you might get that anti relaying message if it wasn't.

Re: Server Error: 550, Error Number: 0x800CCC79

The problem is not with gmail as whatever address I use as the email To: address fails with the same 550 error.
If I define Thunderbird with the user details for the @ntlworld.com email account I can send & receive email so the issue is with Outlook Express talking via SMTP to the NTLWORLD mail servers.
I have tried disabling the Grisoft AVG mail plugin and still get the 550 error in OE.
I can telnet on port 25 to the mail server from the DOS command prompt e.g.
telnet smtp.ntlworld.com 25 and I get a response from the mail server so my firewall is passing TCP Port 25 traffic.
A Google search of this error seems to show lots of stuff relating to NTLWORLD so it looks like their mail servers are a bit flakey. Only problem with the Google search is that I have not found a fix to the OE problem.
Any ideas?

I never mentioned the "To" address, only the From/Reply address.
