Tiscali BB
There have been a lot of moans and groans about NTL BB, but they are not the worst, NTL is only amongst the worst. I use NTL for home, but Tiscali in my office. We used to be on 1 Mbit, recently we upgraded to 8Mbit, for only £3 more, what we got is a lot less, the download speed is only 1.5 Mbit, although I must say this is still early days, but one or two weeks more at that speed I am going to dowwngrade back to 1 Mbit.

Re: Tiscali BB
I'd agree. When we moved I decided it was time to finally get rid of ntl for good, so instead of having the broadband from them (which I actually thought was reasonable) I went with Tiscali.
Little did I know how bad they were. Appaling speeds, terrible support and when they finally agreed to release me from my 12 month contract (after three months) on threat of reporting them to Trading Standards for providing a serice that was not fit for purpose, they carried of charging me after they'd disconnected me! It took me another two months to get that money back too.
Reasonably happy with PlusNet now...although some of the recent email problems have been very annoying and, again, a complete lack of support from the ISP. Seems they're all useless these days.

Ooer ... I have been very tempted to switch to them, thanks to their recent TV advertising. Currently I'm paying Virgin.net (i.e. NTL) £15 a month for 512k, with a 3GB monthly cap. Would people generally advise against this?

Re: Tiscali BB
We got "invited" by email to join, we were on a 1 Mbit connect for less than 1 year.
We phoned up Tiscali Techical Support and they tested the phone line, and says our BT line cannot support 8Mbit. I have to say, Tiscali spent a week doing the upgrade and must know our line is not up to scratch, and still they went ahead with the upgrade, what a waste of time. Now we are back to 2Mbit line. Looking at the Tiscali forum, (do a google search), the customers response is not good. Plus also you are at the mercy of BT lines. BT's own website says our phone line is good up to 8Mbit, so one of them is wrong, or may be our line is a bit crappy.

Re: Tiscali BB
I'm only with Virgin/NTL because when I had dial-up, they were the best unlimited service. When we got broadband it was the simplest option to just upgrade our existing account. But now I'm a bit fed up with only having 512k. While everyone's entry-level product now seems to be in the £15-ish price bracket, many of them give you 1meg or more for your money and Virgin is starting to look pretty pants value for money.
I want to switch but don't know who to go for.

You could always try adslguide's advance search here
A simple search, for isp's in the £15 price range gives some interesting results. Or, you can tailor the first search link I gave, to search for a product matching your own criterior.
I have been looking at the forums at that site, an interesting one is namesco, who have been getting good reviews lately. The namesco forum section can be found here.

Defintely don't go for Tiscali. Appaling speeds (which of course they blame on my local BT exchange, even though thousands of other people report the same problems all over the country and since switching to PlusNet on the same exchange have gone away), appaling customer service that you can never get through to anyone on (at 10p per minute of course), total lack of ability to read email support requests (I'm familiar with FTP, I use it everyday, but I couldn't complete any upload to my own webspace on Tiscali - apparently the problem was my software, which apparently got better when using other people's FTP sites!!!!) and when I dared to have approx 4gb of downloads in one month I got a very snotty email saying that there were limits on my 'unlimited' account.
Apart from all that, they're great.

Re: Tiscali BB
Well, thanks for the warnings.
I'm going to stick with Virgin for the time being anyway, I checked their own website yesterday and discovered they now do 1Meg for what I'm paying ... I sent them a slightly miffed email complaining that I'm still getting 512k for the same price. They said they were doing phased free upgrades, which is why I've not been done yet ... and then initiated the speed upgrade on my account. Yay!

Yea, my uncle is with Tiscali, Really really bad
His speed is equally bad, he signed up for the 2mb option, he gets 500k at best.
