Cable Modem Fault help needed
Hiya Guys,
Firstly let me say I have visited this site several times before, but was until yesterday lucky enough to have not needed any help.
The problem I have developed, is that my cable modem has started to just suddenly flash the ready light (so I loose connection).
It started yesterday, and Tech say there is no known area fault.
Intermittently it comes back as a continuous light and I can use it again, but its impossible to game atm, as I have major lag, and then frequent disconnects as the modem does yet another quick reset and come back on (if i dont get this continuous ready light flashing again).
Turning the thing off for a long period does seem to help, but as I say means that I am unable to game at all, which I why I use the service (wow addict).
I am using the silver cable modem type, and wonder if anyone has had similar problems before, and how they resolved them, basically I am after help pse?
I do have the engineer booked for tommorow, but would like a little more insight into what the prob could be, before they arrive. As I have heard that the silver modems often struggle with the 10mb service (my current service)?
Thanks for reading, and hoping for any reply/help pse.
Marcus

Re: Cable Modem Fault help needed
Have you looked at your signal levels on the modem config page while the fault is occuring?

Re: Cable Modem Fault help needed
I havent because I could not get that link to work for some reason, and if i copy and paste it to another browser, I get the same thing saying it cannot find http://root:root@192.168.100.1 am I doing something wrong?
---------- Post added at 17:00 ---------- Previous post was at 16:41 ----------
Okay, I have it now
Not sure why the shortcut wont work, but just used the Ip in the browser and got the config up.
my Downstream is 27.8 Dbs.
My upstream is showing as 61.0 dBmV which from what I read could be whats leading to my problems?
Anyone help me out on this one? Could this be a result of a faulty modem if this is an issue?

Re: Cable Modem Fault help needed
I've been having similar problems in Norwich, starting last week and getting steadily worse. I'm posting this now as I'm not sure if I'll get another chance to.
Last week the ready light would start flashing and I'd lose my connection, from around 4.30 until about 7 every evening. At first a full reboot seemed to fix it, for a few minutes at least.
Then on Saturday morning, no amount of rebooting would help, it just wouldn't connect and has been like that ever since, save a few times (like now) when it comes on again by itself.
I noticed I had a 192. ip and followed the steps here too http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/sh...ad.php?t=18084
which have occasionally got it started again for a few minutes.
Looking at my signal levels, the only one that stands out is my Upstream transmit Power Level : 61.0 dBmV
I have an engineer booked for tomorrow. Are there any other steps I can do myself to sort this out?

Re: Cable Modem Fault help needed
strange that you have the same problem as me, and yet I live in Gosport (south coast).
Now that I know a little bit more about the cable modem, I will be watching this a little more closely when I loose connectivety again.
can I also state though, when I get the constant flashing ready light, that I do NOT loose my IP address, it stays the same, which is why this is even more puzzeling
Guess as already posted I will just have to see what happens when the engineer visits tommorow afternoon also
Will keep watching this space in case anyone else can shed any light on this

Re: Cable Modem Fault help needed
An engineer came out to look at it today, I spoke to him at the box (I was on my way out) and he said he 'couldn't get any connection' and someone else would be out later.
When i got back it was working again, I have no idea how it was fixed or if his mates turned up. I checked the upstream and it was back to about 53.
However just now my connection went off AGAIN, and the upstream is 61.0 dBmV.
Should I get another engineer out?

61dbmv is to high and cause the modem to reboot .Things to check before the tech arrives make sure you have the right power supply plugged in the modem all silver and blue ambits have a power suply with OEM on it i have seen other power supplys used and this causes problems with the up stream Also check the cable to yuor modem has it been caught some where .if under carpet is it stuck on gripper rod

Re: Cable Modem Fault help needed
Well another engineer came out today and said he couldn't do anything either. Like the bloke yesterday, he said 'area technicians' had to come and fix it. 'Probably later today'. Not happy with this I phoned NTL to check - which took an hour after constantly being passed to broadband faults in india - and they are unbelievably sending another engineer tomorrow.
I have just learned that this is affecting all the NTL neighbours too.
I gave them a second chance when I had the opportunity to get out of my contract earlier this year, this is now just too much.

Cheers Ned, checked all that and everything appears fine. All the neighbours are having trouble too so it must be something else.

Re: Cable Modem Fault help needed
I'm having problems again here in Warwick. The ready light kept flashing on Saturday night and no connectivity. By Sunday morning working OK again. Now I've just checked levels and upstream transmit power level is 61 dbmv and no connectivity again (using 3G datacard on work laptop to post here!).
Should I log a call? I'm getting pretty ****ed off with this - our phoneline was only fixed today after being out of action for several days!
Cheers,
Simon

I'd get them to send someone out as soon as possible, sounds similar to the problem I had. It took days to fix mine so do it as soon as you can.
Mine seems to be ok now, a friendly engineer did turn up today after all, and he fixed the problem with the box outside. My connection seems fine now, but I'm still showing up as 61dbmv?
Hope everyone else on this thread gets fixed soon too.

Re: Cable Modem Fault help needed
reverse path issues. Possibly from a lightning storm or a power surge. Call faults and book another engineer. Tell the engineer that 61db is to high and it should be below 50db (depending on area) and he might despatch a network chap to investigate deeper.
