Netgear RP614v4 and NTL cable modem
Netgear RP614v4 and NTL cable modem
Anyone using the above setup, just can't get the modem to see the router.
Are there any manual settings I can use?

 to Cable Forum
Have you powered off the modem, kept off for say 30 seconds, then powered on again , before powering on the router? Nothing else, USB or internet connected to the router?

Re: Netgear RP614v4 and NTL cable modem
Thanks for the kind welcome. I have followed the setup wizard to the letter, including all the power off, power on stuff. It is all connected via ethernet cable. The only thing I haven't tried is a different cable between router and modem, could be faulty I guess, unless it has to be a crossover?

Re: Netgear RP614v4 and NTL cable modem
Is the Ethernet Cable in the WAN port of the Router?

Re: Netgear RP614v4 and NTL cable modem
LOL Of course it is, or what Netgear calls the internet port(or was, only modem connected to pc at the mo, I'm doing this for a friend) I thought it was going to be easy.
So is there no settings I have to configure in router(apart from security)? Such as
Basic Settings
Does Your Internet Connection Require A Login?
Yes
No
Do you have to select yes and enter your user and pass etc
@Zeph I see your in Poole, how would you fancy a trip to Parkstone lol

Re: Netgear RP614v4 and NTL cable modem
I have spent a VERY long time fighting with the RP614. I have checked just about every possible configuration option very carefully and very thoroughly and I cannot make it work, either with a cable modem or a set-top box. This morning I spent two hours on the phone with an incredibly helpful and patient support technician at Netgear, and we went through all the tests again. He was stumped too.
The problem is that when its starts up, the RP614 fails to establish the WAN IP from the cable modem - I don't know why or how; the WAN light always glows orange (=failed link) and the IP address always shows 0.
I CAN make the RP614 work by transferring the cable from a connection which is already working - set the WAN IP in the RP614 as fixed, copy in the IP details of the working link, set the MAC address to be the same as the working router, then switch the cable. This works until you turn off the cable modem or it renews its IP address (every four days or so). Of course, it depends on you having another working router, which kind of defeats the point of the exercise, but it does demonstrate that it's not a problem with either device, just something to do with the way they (don't) communicate.
I have seen an identical problem with a PC, where the cable modem refused to recognise the network interface on the motherboard, but did recognise the USB network adapter supplied by NTL.
Sorry I can't offer a solution, but at least I can confirm that the problem is (very) genuine.

Re: Netgear RP614v4 and NTL cable modem
Why not get it to work with your PC and then clone the PC MAC address into the Router. I have the V3 and I bypass teh wizzard by going into /basicsettings and then adjusting where necessary. Make sure it is set to be assigned the IP etc automatically too.

Re: Netgear RP614v4 and NTL cable modem
Because it's not a MAC address problem - no matter what you set the MAC address to, the RP614 fails to pick up its WAN IP address from the NTL device (STB or cable modem).

Re: Netgear RP614v4 and NTL cable modem
No user name and password needed.
IP from DHCP.
That should be all that's needed.
Try using a cross-over cable?

Re: Netgear RP614v4 and NTL cable modem
I installed one of these for a friend and had no problems. He uses it with an NTL 250 I think.
It does take a while to bring the connection up though and if, for some reason, the connection fails, it sometimes doesn't reconnect and has to be restarted.
What you need to do is power both off, power on the modem, wait for it to settle (about 30 seconds or so), power on the router and do the same. After about minute it comes up fine everytime.
In terms of setup, I just used the wizard and it got all the settings first time no problem.
