network audio, is this possible ?

Hi,
Not sure if this is possible but may be one of you can help!
I have my main desktop on the second floor of my house and a laptop downstairs. I have them all networked up so I can share files etc however I was wondering if its possible to play a track on one of the pc's and be able to pick the sound up on the other. I know you can buy audio senders that will do this but if I already have a wireless network connection then maybe I can use the network to send the audio.
The reason I ask is that my laptop is connected to my hifi and if I play a track downstairs I would like it to also play through my desktop upstairs as it is also conected to a hifi. If you are familiar with B&O Biosound then this is the same as what I would like to acheive (sound in every room).
Any suggestions welcome

TIA

You could use a Shoutcast Server.

Re: network audio, is this possible ?

Or just share your music folder with your laptop?

Sounds as though both need to be playing at the same time though, like a multi-room hi-fi

Which is where streaming comes in handy.

Re: network audio, is this possible ?

Thanks for all of your suggestions but I’m still stuck with sound in the 1 room unless I get my girlfriend to press play on the other pc simultaneously lol. I think a shout server will be a little bit costly but a few of you definitely know what I am trying to achieve. If you do come across something that will do the job could you please reply to this post.

Cheers

Re: network audio, is this possible ?

Does Windows Media Encoder allow this with audio only? I know it does with video - that combined with VNC/logmein could possibly allow you to do it.

Re: network audio, is this possible ?

You Could Go Hardware and get a Audio stereo wireless transmiter and recever. Plug transmiter in to RCA out of the hifi you want to hear and plug recever in to the RCA in of the other One way of geting round itmight cost though

Re: network audio, is this possible ?

I was going to attempt this in VB ages ago, but i couldn't figure out how to send the audio... Which made it pretty pointless :p

OR use a FM Stereo transmitter and tune all your stereos to the frequency You can make one quite easily if you're handy with a soldering iron.
