Newbie - Linksys Router Setup
Hi,
I'm helping a friend install a wireless router, we have purchased a Linksys WRT300n router which I’m sure is Telewest compatible.
We cannot connect the internet through the router heres what we have tried.
Currently they use a Motorola modem, we tried connecting the modem to the internet and ethernet ports of the Linksys router, and in both cases the internet light comes on and there is activity as it's flashing randomly. We hooked up a cat5 cable from the router to the laptop, the laptop got an IP address from the router fine but there is no internet connection (page cannot be displayed) when we take the router out of the equation ie use cat5 cable from modem to laptop it works fine.
We also tried turning off the modem and plugging the cat5 cable into the set top box again we got all the signs but no life.
Now below are the config pages of the router, the router is currently set to Automatic Configuration (DHCP) which I understand is correct?!? and the interface says it’s DOWN - which doesn't sound right
Can someone help? have I configured something wrong? am I barking up the wrong tree?

Re: Newbie - Wireless Setup
 to Cable Forum
Please confirm that you cannot get a connection, wired, when the ethernet cable successfully plugged in between the modem and laptop, is now unplugged from the laptop and plugged into the router's WAN port, and a new wired ethernet connection is added between the router's LAN port and a PC / laptop. And all devices modem / router / PC have been powered off and back on. I think that's what you are doing but I'm not quite sure?
Your post in one instance says it's a motorola modem, and later you say STB Presumably you do not have a STB connection.

Re: Newbie - Wireless Setup
If I'm reading your diagram right you are connecting the wires wrong.
The Modem ethernet needs to be connected to the router internet port.
The Laptop ethernet needs to be connected to one of the four router ehternet ports.
Remember to power off the modem / router / laptop when swapping over the wires.

Re: Newbie - Wireless Setup
Sorry my diagram not very clear!
I have tried it the way in the diagram and the way you have explained.
I presume that all cables are straight through cat5e cables and NOT CROSSOVERS?
Didn't try this!

Re: Newbie - Wireless Setup
This is weird, I'm not sure that I understand exactly how you are wired up.
Can you post the exact model number of the modem, just so I can be sure what you have? IT's the STB connection that confuses me. The modem itself is connected directly to the Telewest network? It's not got any other box of tricks wired in elsewhere?
All ethernet cables should normally be straight through. You can verify that both work OK by trying a simple connection between laptop Ethernet and modem ethernet. If that works, swap the cable for the other one and confirm that works too.
It'll be worth doing a full factory reset on the router (manual should say how) just to be sure all is at default settings, then reboot everything.
If you are repowering the modem / router / laptop between cable swaps, and you still cannot get a connection between the router and modem, I've got to suspect something iffy with the router's internet connection.

Re: Newbie - Wireless Setup
Yes they do have broadband, the modem when connected to the laptop by cat5 cable works fine.
There is a 3 way STB connection behind the TV, one to the wall, one to the set top box and one to the modem (in another room)
Will try a factory reset
The router is a Linksys WRT300n version 2 (Silver) on some sites it's shown as a WRT300n-UK which mine doens't say now i'm hoping that mine wasn't made for the European market cos it doesn't say UK at the end. Will email Linksys with serial number and find out....

Re: Newbie - Wireless Setup
OK, so the house has digital TV, via a STB (set top box)? and broadband via a Modem? Can you please confrim the exact model of the modem currently being used into which your computer is connected allowing you to be posting this message? i.e. the ethernet cable from the computer is connected into exactly what?

Re: Newbie - Wireless Setup
Not at my friends house at the moment so cannot tell u model of modem.
Yes Digi TV via STB and the motorola modem box is connected to broadband via separate STB cable
They can use the internet using a cat5 cable from the ethernet port of the modem into a laptop, i have done IPCONFIG on the laptop and it does display the internet IP address.
Again sorry for confusion and thanks for your replies so far.
Off to bed now but will get hold of the model number tomorrow.
Cheers

Re: Newbie - Wireless Setup
Hmm weird. I'd try the router on somebody elses broadband and see if it will work there. That would then at least determine if there is a fault on the router, if there isn't back to square one / plan a or whatever (lost for what to suggest).
