Question Virgin Net DNS on ICS

Hi,

I've recently (2 days ago) got Virgin Net Broadband, Plan One (upto 8mb).
I was previously on NTL until I moved into a non-NTL area, hence now on Virgin.

When I was on NTL I had ICS setup through a wired switch and both pc's could get on the net fine.

I've now installed the provided USB modem and get on the net fine from the pc that has the modem connected to it (we'll call that PC1), but can only ping websites and not browse from the client pc via the switch (we'll call that PC2).

I've basically left the same static IP's and DNS's as before when on NTL. Both PC's can see each others shared folders and talk to each other.

These are the values I've got at the moment:

PC1
--------
[Network card] (manual setup)
IP Address 192.168.0.1
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway {blank}

[Virgin Dial-up] (These values are auto-generated via "Obtain from server")
IP Address 82.........
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway {same as IP address, 82...}
DNS Servers 194.168.4.100
194.168.8.100

PC2
--------
[Network card] (manual setup)
IP Address 192.168.0.253
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway 192.168.0.1
DNS Servers 194.168.4.100
194.168.8.100

Virgin Net seem to use the same DNS's as NTL. The setup above lets me ping any website from PC2, in which I get replies from e.g. www.yahoo.com, but not get any websites up in the browser EXCEPT for ntl.com.

Somehow, the DNS for PC2 is only allowing ntl.com to be viewed in the browser. I can't even view www.yahoo.com's by putting in it's IP address in the browser.

It's not a virus/spyware/firewall related, as I've done checks from various products and as I'm able to ping any website on PC2, then some of it is going through. I've used IE6 and Firefox 1.5.0.6.

Is this purely a DNS issue on PC2, do I need to enter other DNS values on that PC? Any thoughts anyone??

Have you setup the new modem connection to enable ICS?

Yes I have. As I'm pinging websites from PC2 I'm getting somekind of connection, but just not on the browser on PC2.
(btw, Pc1 works fine, it's only PC2 that has problems)

I've just realised it can't be DNS related because I can ping domain names, e.g. ping www.yahoo.com

...and I get replies back.

Could it be something on PC1, the ntl drivers that are blocking it??

On PC2 is it possible that you have a proxy server set in your web browser.

No, as I never used it for NTL setup.

On PC2
IE6 > Connections > Lan Settings > [All clear, never dial-up, no proxy setup]
Firefox > Connection Settings > Direct connection to the Internet

Re: Virgin Net DNS on ICS

what kind of firewall software do you have on pcs 1 and 2?

could be that a rule setup here is blocking the connection sharing.

I use BlackIce.

But I've completely disabled it and it's still not viewing websites.

If the firewall was the issue, I wouldn't be able to ping. It's not setup for application blocking either.

Re: Virgin Net DNS on ICS

I would suggest that you reset TCP/IP to use DHCP on PC2 to eliminate problems with manual settings.

Ahh thanks for that. Maybe it was ICS Service enabled on PC2 because I've just found it was switched on while I temporarily enabled it as a host a few days before I switched over ISP's. Still strange how it allowed full domain pinging only.

However I lost patience and decided to get the SpeedTouch 780WL Wireless Router. I'm all connected, sharing folders, all on internet with better firewall now.

Cheers anyway.
