tv and broadband - tell me straight

hi ppl im new to this forum. i have some questions that need to be answered...

1. if u have broadband and get a splitter so u can have tv as well, can u tune channels with no stb - straight to the tv tuner card on pc without ruining the broadband?

2. when u do so, why are all the channels fuzzy and mostly black & white? how do u tune them properly? (using the avermedia card software - any prog will do though).

of course, if i do this, it will be for the free channels only!

please give me some decent answers so i know for sure. thanks very much
