Re: Windows Update
I read up on the pros and cons of installing and decided to give it a go.
Installation went without a hitch and if anything my machine seems to run faster than it did before.
I read somewhere that the update does favour high performace machines with good graphics cards.
Not only that, it upgraded my security so that it passed the latest version (1.2.1) Microsoft Baseluine Security Analyser tests.
Like all things only time will tell but for now I'm pleased and I hope the feeling lasts!!

Re: Windows Update
Well the problem I had with this was a fresh install, on a completely wiped PC. All I had installed was the Win XP disk, then Norton AV and firewall (would you connect your PC to the internet without any protection). I then connected broadband, updated the Norton stuff to current definitions, and then ran the Windows Update (chicken and egg I suppose which first patch windows or patch your A/V - all the time you are online and not current you are no doubt vulnerable). Update loaded XP SP2, after which I then got the errors.
This must be a bug, which I lay at the door of Mr Gates. I don't know, as a reasonable computer user, what I was supposed to have done differently that could have been considered "user error".

Re: Windows Update
I think if you maintain your system regularly and make sure it's fully patched then you will have less problems when it comes to major software upgrades.
For example, someone who rarely has spyware or a virus on their machine, knows how to look after Windows and who defragments regularly (i.e. me) will not have a problem with SP2.

Like me, I've only had a network driver problem (sorted quickly though) and a BSD and my PC seems to be running better since the upgrade.
But XP rarely crashes anyway.

Yes,me too. I regularly go to the PC Pitstop site to get an analysis of the state of my machine and then set about putting them right.
More often than not it is a question of running your anti-virus and something like Adaware or Spybot daily to see what is trying to install itself on your machine.
I also use Browser Hijack Blaster.By doing these things, defragmenting and keeping up to date with the updates from Microsoft you're reducing the odds that something can go wrong.
Mind you it is not 100% and I think there wil always be something that conflicts with whatever version of Windows you have.Problems should come out in the testing but more often than not it's one of us users that comes up with an unsatisfatcory software combination which they haven't tested and which doesn't woprk properly as it should.
I'm dreaming that one day Microsoft will invent a Windows operating system which will run any software you choose to install and then I can get out all those old DOS & Windows 3.1 games that don't run on Windows XP.
Hopefully, too, graphics and sound card manufacturers will have similar software which will allow you to work with any software no matter how old it is. Perhaps XP is a step towards making that dream a reality.

Re: Windows Update
I used the rescue disk on my laptop to take it back to square one because it was full of crap and really slow and I installed my copy of SP2 and I have had no problems so far.

At work, we have just finished rolling SP2 out to >300 machines. No problems found during testing, and none reported yet.
