Re: Spread Firefox: Now we can all get involved
Can a thread started by a moderator ever be unbiased in its moderation? Should there be a list of banned topics?
I'm with others on this. I installed it, my system didn't seem right and half the websites I went to displayed incorrectly or not at all. I removed it and my system still didn't recover - I think dll's were messed with. I reinstalled the OS. I'm waiting for version 2.0

Re: Spread Firefox: Now we can all get involved
I did have FireFox on here for a few days until it decided to crash, reset all the settings to default, thus loosing my theme, plugins, bookmarks etc.
I'll be sticking with IE now until the next version is released

Personally, it took me far longer to switch over from IE than most of my techie peers because I had found several front-ends to IE that suited me, it was purely on the basis of features that I switched, not because I had some mis-guided notion that I'm intelligent enough to understand all the security vunerabilities of each of them.
Security, as I've said in previous IE vs. the world threads is definately an issue, but a secondary one for most people.

I completely agree with this. I should have said at the top of the thread, for those who don't know me by now, that I use a Mac at home, so for me the choice is really between Safari (Apple's own Mac-only browser) or A. N. Other. M$ stopped updating IE for Mac at least a year ago, so is no longer an option for Mac users really.
Safari is a very good browser indeed, I switched to it quite early in its public Beta phase as even then it knocked spots off IE in speed and the like. I have tried Omni Web, Camino, Mozilla and Firefox (quite an early version) in the past and none of them was as swift or as good to look at as Safari. (Omni Web was actually very good, but they expected you to pay for it ... yeah, right...).
I tried Firefox again only recently and the performance improvement is remarkable. It loads pages faster than Safari in most cases on my OSX 10.2.8 machine. Now, this may in part be because Apple is only developing newer versions of Safari for its latest OS, 10.3, so I don't have the best possible version of Safari to compare it with, but TBH that's Apple's lookout, using a browser as a marketing tool to force customers to upgrade their OS is a ridiculous strategy when there are so many browsers out there. Firefox lets me decide which search engine to use in the toolbar (you can't even localise the Google search field in Safari), it has funky extensions like Chatzilla (especially useful for me as there are few IRC clients for Mac, and no others I have found so far are free), the various security features are more customizable, and unlike Safari it doesn't over-ride things like button and scrollbar design with the standard OSX aqua look (which is very pretty and all, but I do like to see a web page as it was designed, if possible).
Of course, here at work I'm stuck with a standard corporate image which compels me to use IE5.5 with sp2, so no Firefox (aslthough I may install it anyway once it goes to full v1 release just to see how it handles our intranet pages, which have been designed for and tested only on IE5.5 and 6.

They have hit 1 million in just 4 days!
They estimate that they'll exceed 2 million in the 10 days:

The more I play with Firefox the more I love it. I've been browsing through the extensions and adding icons to my toolbar today - the two new ones here are Chatzilla (the smiley face) and, the reall killer app, the automatic Gmail checker. Superb work.

You'll like this Chris:

After playing with FF now I've decided to switch permanently and use Thunderbird as my mail client instead of Mozilla App Suite.
Pages were loading slowly until I remembered that the pipelining is disabled by default.
To alter these go to about :config and type in "http" in the search box at the top, set "http.pipelining" to true by double clicking on it.

I hate double posts but I just must mention that I love the Adblock extension.
Since installing this, I can right click on any advert and it vanishes before my eyes!
Now I have an ad-free Register, Inquirer, Slashdot and all the other sites I visit!

Now that I must have .... Mrs T is going out this evening so I have an entire evening of tinkering about with my setup ahead of me. Bliss! (Not that spending time with my beloved isn't bliss, you understand ) I think I'll put the adblock extension at the top of my 'to do' list.

Re: Spread Firefox: Now we can all get involved
Installed. It's great.
Firefox just gets better and better. I'm now running both Firefox and Thunderbird using the Noia Lite skins, and I am nothing short of amazed at all the things that can be done, that everyone takes for granted CANNOT be done when browsing.
I can't speak highly enough of Firefox/Mozilla, and it improves by the day.
