[Merged] Firefox: get involved!
As the Mozilla Foundation announces the Preview Release of its open-source web browser, Firefox, at last there's something us non-techies can do to support the project.
http://spreadfirefox.com/community/?q=
I'm off to sign up and find out how I can join the Firefox marketing department
EDIT
Well, I've emailed the head of the 'Wordsmiths' department offering my assistance as a copy editor! I never thought I might be able to get involved in an open-source project.

While I think this is a brilliant idea - I don't think I've got anyway I can personally contribute - aside from telling my friends to install it - but I thought I'd bump the thread up again for you

Re: Spread Firefox: Now we can all get involved
Why thank you
As I read down the page on the Spread Firefox website I wasn't sure if there was going to be anything I could do - but they seem to be happy with any contributions at all, even if it's just copying and pasting code to create an email sig or webpage link.
I had to modify the page link code to make it work as my forum sig as we can't put HTML in our sigs here, but if anyone wants to add the one I'm using to their CF sig, the code is:
[ URL=http://spreadfirefox.com/community/?q=affiliates&id=0&t=55"][ img]http://www.spreadfirefox.com/community/images/affiliates/Buttons/180x60/trust.gif[/IMG][/URL]
... with the spaces removed from the URL and IMG tags.
The site has other images to choose from as well.

Am I the only person who's excited about the imminent final release of Firefox 1.0? I thought this thread might have provoked a row about whether or not we should stop whinging about IE?

Maybe you should take the silence as agreement - everyone on the site has ditched IE in favour of firefox..... maybe this is the end of the forum as we know it - everyone in agreement... what ever will we do now???????

Stop whinging about IE
No, I'm not excited about it, and no I won't be changing to it.

Re: Spread Firefox: Now we can all get involved
What advantages does Firefox have over the standard Mozilla browser?
I am currently using Mozilla 1.5 and was thinking of upgrading to 1.7.3 but everybody seems to be raving about Firefox nowadays.

Simplicity is the only thing I can think of.
I'm not switching though because I'm running Mozilla App Suite 1.8 and compared to Firefox it's much faster, stable and more useful to me as a developer.
Mozilla starts instantly on my system, faster than IE even due to the quick launch feature and it renders pages faster too.

Mainly, in my opinion, the fact that it's ideally suited to those less experienced on the internet. (I hate the term *newbies*).
Standard, full Mozilla, is just too bloated and complex for such people. It's great for people who know what they're doing, but your average Joe takes one look at it and is put right off. Opera is exactly the same.
The Firefox team have clearly realised this, they have made their browser's default look simple and user friendly, probably MORE so that IE now. However, for those more experienced users who want the power and the tweaks and the brass knobs, these are easily accessible. People were also sick and tired of pages not displaying correctly, only to be told it's a page coding error......again, your average Joe is NOT INTERESTED in standards compliance, they just want the page to load properly! This may annoy the purists, but it's a fact of internet life. Again, Firefox has now sorted this and it will happily load non compliant pages just like IE does...we could argue the rights and wrongs of that til the cows come home but as I said, it's a fact of life now.
This has always been my big gripe about alternative browsers, they were always stuck as a niche market because ordinary less experienced users would be put off. Firefox has changed all that, and it's now damn near perfect for the job.
Once the first full release is out, I expect great things of it. Its matching mail client, Thunderbird, is great as well, for the same reasons. Something very big is emerging, at last!

Re: Spread Firefox: Now we can all get involved
Everytime i install FireFox it seems to muck up my system in some way, shape or form. So i tend to stick with Internet Explorer patched up to the eyeballs.

I'm excited ok
If I got any MORE excited I think I'd burst something
I have both IE and firefox on my systems... In fact the only computer in the house that DOESN'T have firefox on it is buxom_womans. And that's only 'cos I've not told her about it
