I think if you just call the 0800 number then just select the option to speak to customer services - early afternoon is usually a good time to call.

In the NW there is a dedicated number that customers can call and leave a message on the ansaphone to cancel fault appointments.

There's numbers for ESE and London too.

0800 052 0340 and 0800 052 0360 respectively (I think). Both go to an answering service so you can leave your details.

Or just push 0 on the phone and it will override the options and allow you to skip all the pre-recorded waffle.

Happy to help. One thing I probably should have mentioned is that you might need to give the button a couple of presses, and it is when you get the beginning of the first message along the lines of "If you are phoning to blah blah blah", with the NTL set-up there is a small amount of message before it start accepting key presses. The first press will probably start the message again, the second should override the options.
