NTL Email, MS Outlook: Timeout!
Me and my brothers emails worked fine before. Except we kept getting Spam mails. So i installed Nortone Internet Security (With Norton Antispam). Everything was great. Then my brother started timing out trying to recieve (pop.ntlworld.com)
Mine was fine, then after a week mine did it too. Webmail worked fine, i tried outlook express and that also seemed fine.
I Upgraded from Outlook 2000 to 2003 and it said Antispam caused it. I turned off antispam and it was fine! But i really like, and want to keep anti spam. Is there any fix for this?
I was thinking of ringing tech support... but i wasn't sure if they would help much. Any comments and/or suggestions would be appreciated thanks!

Hi Mooncow to the forum
I'm not going to be much help, I'm afraid, as I use neither Norton Antispam, nor Outlook 2003, but at least this will bump your post back to the top
- one question, as Outlook Express worked ok, is there any particular reason you prefer to use Outlook?

If you ring tech support, they will tell you they don't support outlook as it is a business program. How about using mailwasher instead of norton antispam? I use it along with outlook 2003, and have never had any probs (touching wood here!!)

I find the built-in Outlook 2003 junk-mail filter pretty good - especially if you download the latest filters.

but your are still downloading all that spam etc to your pc. with mailwasher, you check whats on the server and delete from there. personally i think it's the better option

I do that, it works for me, too, I run mailwasher first, delete the crap, then run outlook express to read what's left

I also use Outlook Express connected to ntlworld using IMAP and delete most junk jut by reading the from, to and subject.
I never got on with mailwasher, especially the useless Bounce function!

Re: NTL Email, MS Outlook: Timeout!
I used to use MailWasher & thought it was great...well, until i found Spam Inspector v4 www.giantcompany.com. Has made my life much easier regards spam.
BTW, dont waste your time bounching back spam, its easier just to delete it, as alot of spammers dont use valid email addresses any more.

In a nutshell IMAP is for accessing e-mail from your local server.
IMAP receives the e-mail and is then held for you by your Internet Service Provider.
Basically if you set your account to imap. instead of pop. then you will be able to view just the headers and the sender of the e-mail.
From that you should be able to make the call whether you download the e-mail.
Hope that helps.

The Web interface uses IMAP at some level, this leaves the messages on the server, just lets you look at them remotely. Useful if you use multiple PC's and don't want to download and store email on each of them
You can use this with ntl, by creating a new account of type IMAP instead of POP3, and specify the incoming server as imap.ntlworld.com (*). Outlook Express (for example) can then be set to download "headers only". One quirk of imap is that when you delete a message it is just marked as 'deleted', you have to 'purge deleted messages' to actually delete them.
(*) I guess this is not officially supported by ntl - but it works!!!
