Angry Unacceptable Speeds

I live in Heywood, between Bury and Rochdale, Gr. Manchester, and my broadband speeds are getting unacceptable.

First of all, my download speed started at 89Kb/s.
Then it fell to 60Kb/s
then 50, 40, 30, right down to 20.

This has been happening for a few months now, but I have been biting my lip and trying not to complain. But I've recently got download speeds of 4Kb/s and this is too far.

My connection is (meant to be) 600k, and I do not have any other programs running which could consume bandwidth.

Does anybody know what the problem is?

Have you called NTL about this?

Re: Unacceptable Speeds

No, I thought I'd only resort to their 'customer services' if it's a life or death situation, I just wanted to see if anyone else was having the same problems.

Re: Unacceptable Speeds

Everywhere. I think the 4Kb/s low was when I was downloading from www.download.com

Still, the 20Kb/s connection is unacceptable on what is meant to be a 600k connection.

Re: Unacceptable Speeds

Call NTL. This is something that tech support should be dealing with. I would have called them weeks ago if I were you.

Do this speed test, & post back the results now.

1st 128K took 2594 ms = 50529 Bytes/sec = approx 420 kbits/sec
2nd 128K took 7281 ms = 18002 Bytes/sec = approx 150 kbits/sec
3rd 128K took 6735 ms = 19461 Bytes/sec = approx 162 kbits/sec
4th 128K took 6218 ms = 21079 Bytes/sec = approx 175 kbits/sec

It starts off OK (but still not quite 600k) then gets worse.

Ouch

Are you sure you have no spyware etc on your PC/P2P software running (uploads wil throttle your downloads remember)

If you are all certain, then your only option is to ring ntl Tech Support (remember to take a name of the person's name/extension number that you speak to)

I'll scan for spyware in a second, thanks.

And this is an STB modem, unfortunately.
