Question Power Spikes: Am I safe now?

Hey all,

Last night I was on one of my other PC's and my g/f was on hers. We were just loading a game of half-life, and suddenly the lights went off for a second, and so did the PC's. Now, my PC (which is a newish 2.4 GHz beast) was reset by this.

My g/f's PC, on the other hand, just turned off. And would not turn on again! However, this morning, it is working!

We have surge protectors for all the plugs in here, and the power outages continued throughout the night - just for a second or so, about once an hour . Apparently there was a far-off thunderstorm last night, so I expect that was the source of the problem!

Anyway, the point of this post is to check : is it safe to use the Pc's as normal? Is there anything I can do to make sure they are OK? Normally I'm very cautious when thunderstorms are around, but last night it was miles away so I had no idea it was happening!

Thanks!

Perhaps you should have a look here - http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/sh...ad.php?t=13191

ZrByte is having a similar issue.

Don't some PSU have a protection from surges? So they turn off until there to a safe level? I'm not sure if it's because of that but if it's working then it's most likely alright

Re: Power Spikes: Am I safe now?

Thanks people!

My probs do sound a lot like ZrByte's, you are right!

However, I think, as it hasn't happened before, and there was a thunderstorm, that it is most likely to have been due to that (I hope). If it happens again, I will be off begging for money to buy a tank-sized UPS

The electrics are really dodgy in this house though. A while ago I started getting electrocuted turning on the taps in my bathroom (it used to be a rest home, so we have en suites, lol). My parents thought I was making it up. Turned out there was a plug UNDERNEATH my sink that was still TURNED ON! We had to rip out the sink and so on to find it. The taps had leaked down onto this old plug, which was happily sitting there, big blue sparks flying out of it. No wonder I have such stupid, spiky hair...

I remember ages ago I was running Win 3.11 on a 486, and there was a power cut. Wrecked the entire system. Ah, those were the days...!
