windows media player 10
microsoft has issued an open beta for the new media player update, windows media player 10.
offering improved navigation, DRM (digital rights management) and improved integration of music stores.
most noteably, the media player will add DRM functionality for portable devices.

Other improvements in Media Player 10 include a streamlined interface. Basic features like ripping, burning, and synching to devices are easier to find. The look of the window takes up much less space, and no longer has an annoying left-side panel. The design slims down much better, to the point where the window can be resized into a playback controls-only view.

For users who want maximum control of their audio and video playback experience, advanced audio settings have been added including such features as aspect ratio adjustments for letterbox (16:9) displays or content, color space conversion and black level calibration for truer color reproduction in varying environments and lighting conditions, as well as advanced de-interlacing and AV sync options.

I hope this means I can stop using PowerDVD.
WMP9 was missing a SPDIF option for DVDs to let me use 5.1 DTS/Dolby digital.
WMP 8 & 9 only play back in stereo.
EDIT: Nice one M$ -

Ok - it's maturing as we speak. And in fact it's installed and running. Apart from the appearance it doesn't seem all that different to WMP9.

I'm not bothered by privacy issues.
I run a legit version of XP that I bought, I have nothing to hide.
The DRM for ripped tracks can be disabled in the options BTW.
WMP is the only M$ software that I actually like (apart from the OS but I don't have much choice about that, most game are released for it).

I think what K is on about is that it sends back aggregated stats to MS about how often you use it and what sort of files you use with it etc. Not spy-ware in the normal sense of the word, like some of these dialers and browser hijackers but still an invasion of your privacy (to some). However you are given the option to turn this "feature" off in the options, like you can with the Google tool bar.

Re: Windows Media Player 10
Just installed it, works perfectly, slight change to the full mode interface, haven't delved too deeply, plays DVD's flawlessly (with AC3 audio) but then so did WMP9. I haven't used winamp in ages, and will probably not go back to it.
