Email providers
Can't see a similar thread...
Any ideas on alternative email providers, not necessarily free but must be reliable and ad free. Not bothered for anti- virus or spam facilities. I've looked at web hosting companies that provide POP accounts as part of the package but it always looks like I need a domain first, which I'm not fussed for having/buying.

Re: Email providers
In the admittedly unlikely event that you are a Mac user, I can heartily recommend subscribing to the DotMac service, which includes a very reliable @mac.com email account.

Re: Email providers
looks like i-web will oblige, like they have with incognitas you will be set up with
yourname@yoursubdomain.iwebhosted.co.uk or something like that.
I've only been using it for a week, but for 99p a month or 10.69 a year the basic package looks good value, also has spam options if you want and no advertising.

Yeah but it's usually wiser to ask other people otherwise you end up with a flakey company: poor customer service, email servers always down...

It was the domain bits that weren't clear - do I get them or should I have them before I sign up, presumably from some domain provider?? Having a quick look around i-web I got the impression it wasn't aimed at newbies I've managed a web server before now - it's just this whole domain business that confuses me.

Re: Email providers
If you want your own domain name go to someone like UK2.net and buy it. Then when you set up with iweb, they tell you the servers to point your domain at, you put them into uk2 and it changes in about 24 hours. Then off you go.
I think I web will buy them for you, but it's not something the do on line or as ruthlessly efficiently as a company like uk2. Looking at their site it looks like it is really part of the corporate rates. The cheapest with a .co.uk name hosting is £10 a month. UK2 will register a .co.uk for £5 for 2 years (and I got charged a £3.98 registration fee, though it looks like they have reduced that now.
So just need to choose a name now. For £8.98 + £10.69 you will have your email worries sorted for 12 months.

Re: Email providers
Does anyone know of somewhere I can access a reliable outgoing SMTP server? My hosting service only deals with incoming mail, saying "use your ISP's outgoing server", but with ntl's being so unreliable it's causing problems because I'm getting messages from customers saying "you haven't acknowledged my order"
All I want is somewhere I can send mails to so they'll get to the recipients!

Know the feeling about customer problems. Most don't have smtp servers anymore due to them needing to be open relay which would attract spammers.
