My hosts file stopped working.

For a long time I've been blocking popups by adding the ip's to my hosts file.
Recently I did a full reinstall of win98 and did a windows update and got all the updates. I added all the ip's back to my hosts file but they're no longer blocked.
I thought it was because I was using a proxy server but when I stop using it it makes no difference.
I had been using IE5.5, and since all the updates I'm using IE6. Could it be that IE6 no longer uses the hosts file or maybe it's been superceded by some option hidden deep in IE's menu's (although I looked and failed to find anything.)

Does anyone have any ideas?

Re: My hosts file stopped working.

Thanks for those. In the end I didn't need them though, I just finished searching and found this http://www.pacificnet.net/%7Ebbruce/forcedns.htm which did the trick. It still doesn't work when I use the web proxy (unless I add the ip's to the Exceptions list), so that's that one sorted.
