DynDns and Email

I have a domain name say domain.co.uk that I want to send emails to my home mailserver (can be either Unix or Windows) - I am on NTL therefore no static IP address so I use Dynamic address through www.dyndns.org so therefore I have domain.dyndns.com

I want to redirect any mails sent to anyaddress@domain.co.uk onto my mail server at home...I have full control over dns and therefore MX records on my domain.co.uk (123-reg.co.uk) and dyndns offers me "Enable wildcard" that I've enabled so I can have mail.domain.dyndns.com and it also offers the use of Mail exchanger records and a checkbox for backup MX.

Anyone ever configured something like this before and want to give me some ideas. I know my home email server is working by the way as I can send/receive emails within my home network.

Re: DynDns and Email

I've just been looking at doing exactly that.
As far as I can tell, you just need to set up the 123reg MX record (priority 5) to point to your dyndns domain - you don't need to configure dyndns MX (unless you want to send mail to somebody@your.dyndns)

One problem that you may have (and is the reason I haven't actually done this yet), is that your SMTP server may just bounce mails for any users it doesn't know about. I tend to register site specific email addresses (e.g. yahoo@mydomain.co.uk), and so have a lot of different usernames (and I can't remember them all). Depends if you can configure your SMTP server to accept any username and direct unknown ones to a default mbox.
