Tried it, didn't hear anything.

On which line? Whatever, it means that the master socket hasn't got a physical connection to the switch. If it's the BT line, it's almost certainly going to need the installer to show their face again.
(And that should be my 200th post, too)

LOL sorry, for some reason I read that as blow into one phone and see if you can hear yourself in the other! haha
No, if I blow in the phone on both sockets I can here myself in that phone on that line!

I was sitting here thinking 'He hasn't just done that, has he? Nah, surely not.' when you posted the message before. I guess I could have explained it better, actually.

Looks like my original hypothesis, then. The NTL line has ceased, but hasn't been disconnected physically. Calls are no longer routing to NTL, but are ringing somewhere on the BT local network.
Let us know what happens, anyway. I'm 95% certain this is BT's problem, with the 5% there as a safety margin for my own human fallibility

Re: No phone!! Grrrr
Have a BT engineer coming out tomorrow between 1pm and 4pm. hopefully it will get sorted then.
I would rep you Pritch, but it gives me a msg to spread my reps around, before giving you a rep again.

True. Does look as if this was disconnected after BT giving the thumbs up, though.

Porting itself is instantaneous. The 10-day malarkey is to do with giving notice to the other operator to make the number available. As you were doing a return to donor, not a number port, there would be nothing showing on the account about an export. I can see how customer services would have grasped the wrong end of the stick, and advised you on what would happen if you wanted to export the number.

Re: No phone!! Grrrr
Everything is working again now. Engineer was due between 1pm and 4pm, but he turned up at 9am as he lives a couple or roads away. Frees up my afternoon anyway He said that normally BT switch the number over and leave the line as it is for a year or so in case they have to move it back, but as I've been with NTL for 3 or 4 years they have used the circuit, or whatever, for someone else. He had to pop off to the box in the road and switch things back. Normally he said it could all be done remotely, but when they've switched it over like this it requires an engineer. Now all I have to do is order my ADSL. He said I'm within 1km of the exchange so should be able to get whatever speed I want, which I knew anyway as I had it before and knew the exchange is only about 750m up the road!
