modem problems

hi all i have a problem with a dial up modem, i installed in my tower........

i set up the relavent passwords and setup i need to connect, but upon connecting when the 'dialing' message appears the computer becomes unresponsive and if it ctrl - alt - del the pc will freeze.

so far i have done the following:

changed various settings in the modem properties.

changed the IRQ to a 'free' one.

changed PCI slots.

used the diagnostics utility within xp, to see if the modem responds with OS, that was sucessful.

anyone know the cure to the problem, or have any ideas

help would be appreciated

Only thing I can think of is make sure the modem is not in the slot next to the AGP slot. That slot is really for a graphics card and AFAIK shares the resources with the graphics.

I did notice that, but it could now be in the slot next to the AGP slot.

Your mobo manual might give the IRQ addys for the various slots or at least say which are shared.

The usual response would be to refresh or update the modem drivers. I also don't know if you can 'refresh' the Network stack in XP. Russ once published an excellent read through for W98.

the modem was taken from another pc, there is no drivers disk, XP installed it and was ready to use..........

ill try and see if i can locate drivers for it

Can I just say that I've had modems that XP has 'picked up' that seem ok - respoding and everything in the diagnostics section - but don't actuallyh WORK

Also I've had lockups like you describe in this situarion and when I used a different cable it all worked ok.

It's possible XP has installed 'generic' modem drivers which as 'dilligaf' says often don't work very well (if at all). Modems seem to be very sensitive to driver s/w.

One other thing..if you can pick up the phone on the same line as your PC's modem, press any button (to get rid of the dial tone) and listen for any noise or random crackling. Line noise can have odd effects.

When it first starts to dial do you hear a dial tone at all followed by the sound of dialing or is it freezing as soon as it starts the process?

sorry for the delay in replying

i hear a click and a static like noise then thats it, but i cant seem to find any working drivers for it can someone help me ?

the modem is a 'HSP56 MICROMODEM' i went to driverguide.com and downloaded some drivers but they dont seem to work.

i cant seem ti find anything in the first link (note im on 56k its painful after having 600k then 1meg for so long)

second link is the same driver i tried to install no success

I have downloaded the driver Kronas if you PM me your NTL email addy I can send it that way (about 1 meg zip file btw)

That will need to be extracted to a folder or floppy and then used to install the driver.

that does not work, maybe because the drivers are already installed ( the ones which xp chose)

Just a thought but this sounds similar to the problem I had a few years back on a new HP Pavilion. What made it embarrassing was that when I took it all back the the damn thing worked a treat in the shop.
Eventually out of desperation I made up a new lead just using pins 2 and 5. After that it worked fine.
