Poor 600k connection

Before I start, please excuse my ignorance on all things BB and NTL related.

I have read a few posts and still feel a bit out of my depth.

Every now and again certain webpages wont load up? Then all of a sudden I don't get any pages loading up. Then when they do load up it takes a good 1-2 minutes.

I am after any information or help, is it a hardware problem at my end, a software problem at my end or NTL?

Please.

Ian

What speeds are you getting if you download a reasonably large file, say from www.bbc.co.uk or www.microsoft.com ? I say these two as they are usually pretty fast servers so any delays should be down to NTL/your connection.

Also, are you running any type of firewall. If so, make sure this isn't blocking required packets as this could result in poor page loading speeds.

Finally, quite a few people are experiencing loss of pages due to problems with NTL's proxy servers (including myself). I've now resorted to specifying a non-NTL proxy in my connection settings thanks to the guys on this forum. Might be worth trying.

Its probably the same problem as the rest of us and down to NTLs Proxy servers (or Poxy servers) as they have obviously become known.

Do a search around here for either of the above terms and you can get more info. The search buttion is on the top bar of the forum pages. It's not worth repeating whats already been said.

Also look at user rdhw s profile http://forum.nthellworld.co.uk/member.php?u=1209 . His website is a fantastic resource for these issues also. It also has a speed test you can run to see if it is your expectaions that are not being met.

I'm in the same boat. Downloading stuff is as speedy as ever. Getting webpages up is another thing altogether. I ran the test that someone mentioned above and these are the results......

Section 3: Download Speed Results
Three downloads are tested; one from one of your ISPs servers, one through your Transparent Cache and one through an alterntive cache. This will give you an idea of how capable your connection is. Note: You should take the highest download speed into account.

ntl:World - 512k service Server Download:
70KB/s (560Kb/s) - Superb - much higher than expected

Download through Transparent Cache:
70KB/s (560Kb/s) - Superb - much higher than expected

Download through alternative Cache (webcache.blueyonder.co.uk):
0KB/s (0Kb/s) - **** SERVER ERROR: Unexpected error from Server****

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Section 4: Packet Loss
50 Ping Requests are sent to your server. The packet loss is measured by how many of the packets don't bounce back to the client. High packet loss may slow down your connection.
50 packets were sent, 50 bounced back; 0% loss (estimated)
Fantastic - no packets dropped!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Section 5: Transparent Cache Page Fetch Time
This test times how long your Transparent Cache takes to fetch a page from the Internet. Please note that this test is subject to many different parameters and sometimes may not be 100% accurate. This test can be used to show delays when trying to view Internet sites. The timing takes place from the moment the request for the file is sent to the moment the proxy server responds.

Average time taken to retrieve a page: 25ms - Fine, nothing to worry about

Broadband Speed Test - www.vantage.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk

No idea what any of that means. it does say i have better than expected results yet the fact that this webpage took about 10 seconds to load would suggest otherwise.

Can someone enlighten me as to what the above means? thank you

Section 1: General Ping Results
A Ping test is the time taken for a server to reply to a request

Section 2: Custom Server Ping Results
These results are to four user-definable servers.

Ping is a test of how whether your PC can talk to another PC, basically it sends a hello message and the other server replies.

This indicates there is a connection that is stable.

This shows the speed of your connection. 560k is close to the 600k specified, so no worries there. This also indicates you transparent cache is OK. It is saying higher than expected as the benchmark in the software is 512, before NTL increased it to 600k.

More on pings for quality of connection. All hellos are getting through.

Cache tests again. I don't know how this software tests the cache, makes sure it is using the cache you are.

Personally I think it is cache problems. Look at the post above.
