Ok at the risk of humiliating myself further (in for a penny....) let me try and get this straight in my head, which incidentally is a pretty scary place at the moment.

I plug into host similar card to one which currently resides in client. Use crossover cable to connect from pc to modem and connect AP to modem?

No life could not be that simple. Section me now or pour a double JD with chocolate on the side

You can do that, but you have a choice. In the back of the access point is an RJ45 connectior, which you can use to plug the AP into the gateway PC with an ethernet cable.

Alternatively, you can buy a wirelesss PCI card and put it into the gateway PC and use that to connect to the AP.

PPS. I think it's a straight ethernet cable from PC to CM.

Nope

card goes in the client. Access point plugs into one of the two network cards you have in the pc. The other network card connects to the set top box via the cross over cable. The following will then hapen.

Your laptop is asked to bring up a web site. It transmits via radio to the access point. The access point then sends the request to network card no.1. The pc then routes then asks the set top box for the page via network card no.2 to the modem

Two network cards? I'm lost at this point. The host has previously been networked (successfully I might add) and still has nic, any help or relevance?

AP would link to pc through a network card and host would then connect using crossover cable to modem.

The reason I was asking about using WL 1000 cardbus in the host is because I have a spare

Jeez I'm a spoonhead. Reading back through reminded me when I first installed the card and software on the laptop, after reboot up popped network bridge??? Any relevance. It wasn't there before and there wasn't anything mentioned in the spiel. I kinda deleted it at one of the uninstalls thinking it would pop back up when I reinstalled but it didn't.

Also probably a totally irrelevant factor but I'm running zonealarm and AVG. I even disabled them during instalation to no avail.

I was just wondering where you got the access point? Did you get it off the web or from a local shop? I'm saying this because you may end up with a working setup following all the advice above, but for a little more (a wireless router), you would have had a far more flexible setup (it doesn't require the gateway machine to be on).

If you got it from a local shop, you may want to consider going back, explain the situation (maybe say you weren't properly informed), and see if you can exchange the access point for a router (paying the extra cost).

If you got it off the web, you could still try the same, but you would be charged for returning an item that you ordered and is in good working order.

Just my 2p.

A compromise? Hard to please, you guys

Ok the set up was a gift (I must have been on the naughty list) so in reality hasn't cost me anything in monetary terms, only 25 hours of my life, so far.

To be honest I could be tempted to return items to gift bearer inserted into orifices that the sun is rumoured to make an appearance from every once in a while but I have calmed down somewhat and have renewed hope that there is a chance of reaching a happy conclusion.

I think maybe a reprieve of 24 hours is in order, after that I will probably rethink the game plan (there are a million things I need to do before I reach 30) and use plan b

Thanks for the advice, I'll keep you updated.
