Can anyone recommend a good freeware DOS emulator compatible with Windows 98 SE please?

Thats what I was wondering .. NT/2K and XP I could understand (and if you need one for them OS's try http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/news.php?show_news=1)

Hi Altis,

For some reason that doesn't appear in my list, however I do have a link to the Cmd.exe program on the Microsoft Office Shortcut Bar but I can't get the free memory requirement high enough i.e. 580k or higher for the DOS games I want to use e.g. Iron Assault, Zone Rangers, F15 etc as some require extended memory. You 'd think that with 768MB of memory present it could generate enough!!

Any other ideas would be most welcome.

I think he is after something that will give him a clean dos env. with to tsr's - the 98 prompt runs loads of crap in the background and realmode prog's dont like that.

I needed to do this once so I made a bootable cd with a full copy of msdos6.1 on it. It used to boot into a lovely clean dos..... Its a bit of a bugger if you need to change the autoexec.bat or config.sys file though

What you need to run is 'C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND.COM'.

If this doesn't work, right click on the file above, select properties and fiddle with the memory settings.

That sounds pretty good. I have the disk version of DOS 6.22 from my Windows 3.1 days. If I could get that onto a CD and alter the BIOS order to boot from the CD, would that work without the need to alter the system hard drive autoexec.bat and config.sys files?

It should work fine. Make sure that you spec. the default and root paths to e:\ or whatever your cdrom drive is. You will also need to put the mscdex loader in the exec.bat and config.sys. I sugest that you play with a bootable floppy first to get the settings correct and then burn it to disk. If you get any of the config incorect you may have to burn another disk

You don't need an old version of Dos. Simply format a floppy disk but with the box 'Copy system files' ticked.

Easier than that - go and edit the file C:\MSDOS.SYS and add the following lines in the [options] section:

BootKeys=1
BootMenu=1	
BootMenuDefault=1
BootMenuDelay=5

Then, every time you boot the computer you will be presented with a menu. For the bare minimum select 'safe command prompt'.
