Apparently the evidence all points to it being windows update on WinME machines - if you search the systems files on an ME machine it turns up in some files related to windows autoupdate.

AU magic is a trojan get a copy of spy bot and use your virus scanner, you get rid of it by disabling system restore. restarting PC then enabling sytem restore

I ran a quick google on the subject and also visited a few forums. It would seem no1 is 100% certain, but there are 3 most common "guesses"

1) Spyware

2) System Updates for ME

3) Zone Alarm something or other

The thing I noticed from every site was every user was on Win ME. I would guess System updates myself, as spyware would have little value for a target of just one Windows distribution

(is distribution the correct term?)
