ZoneAlarm and Correct Connect
Hi Guys ...
Got a bit of an annoying problem ... see if you can confirm or deny ...
I'm running Windows ME, on a decent spec machine connected to BB via a STB.
I've got the cheapo version of ZoneAlarm running (yeah I know cheapskate).
I've now had several attempts from a program called -AUMagic to access the internet. I've checked on the ZoneLabs forum and there is a belief that it's to do with the Windows ME Automatic updates ... but I doubt it ... so did a little more digging.
On the image I've attached, on one of the lines, you could get more info .. so clicked on it and it sent me to here ..
http://pralerts.zonelabs.com/pranaly...overview&CL=en
Which mentions that it's related to Correct Connect ... which is even more interesting as I uninstalled it about a month ago.
My question is, does anyone else have the same symptoms with Windows ME/Correct Connect/NTL BB. Would be interested in any responses.
Thanks

Well.... on the one hand yes there are reports that it's Windows Update being mis-reported but then again it could be Music Match Jukebox's updating
mechanism. So if you don't have music match installed then it will probably be a mis-reported windows update which seems to be reported problem from the number of MS newsgroups its been posted in.
Google link
One thing though Si, have you checked for spyware/ adware etc on the PC?

I don't have Music Match ... but Windows update seems to work just fine ...
Confusing ... even more so when ZoneAlarm relates AUMagic to Correct Connect ???? Weird
BTW ... Machine is clear ... done checks on Spy/Adware just in case I'd been caught out ... also virus checked etc ... All apps accounted for nothing odd to report.

Re: ZoneAlarm and Correct Connect
Have you checked for any reference to aumagic in your registry? I had a problem with corrupted reports in ZA a while back, had to remove it, clean all references from my pc (registry, log files etc) and then reboot and re-install it to clear the problem. Maybe its a database fault in ZA itself.

I've done full scans of the PC, including the registry ... nothing found ... the file -AUMagic doesn't actually exist either ...
Thanks for the replies

have you noticed jv16 v1.3 timed out on Jan 1st?
v1.2 still works, apparently.
v1.4 costs 20 quid odd.
- well maybe it is on topic, 'cos otherwise running v 1.3 is what I would have advised Simon to do

Zone Alarm has a habit of corrupting its database file. Sometimes deleting this file and allowing ZA to rebuild it can put the problem right. Download the newest version as well though
Don't know if the files locations are the same but in XP you do the following:

JV16 powertools is a tool that can check your registry for errors amongst other things.

Ok .... Now I understand LOL
I have already removed ZA with all associated little bits that it left behind and re-installed .... same result .... you think it's fine and then up it pops again ... and I'm buggered if I'm just gonna allow it through without knowing what it is ..

Re: ZoneAlarm and Correct Connect
If you stop it from accessing the internet does anything fail to work? If not then don't worry it might just be ZA reporting a program wrongly. Just block it and if anything fails to work then that may narrow it down LOL

I would've done that anyway after a while ... it just got more of my attention when I saw that it may be realted to Correct Connect.
Thanks to both you and Gaz for the help on this ... you know another brain/pair of eyes etc

Totally confuse the situation LOL A lot of programmes have "auto update" features these days which make it hard to lock your connection down fully and a lot of trojan/ spyware writers know that. It can be a pain sometimes figuring out what's going on. -AUMagic seems to have been reported anything up to 6 months ago but still no concrete information
