Question Should I upgrdade

I have been on BB for over a year @150 Speed I have recenty installed broad jump correct connect to check a slow connectio problem. When I do connectivity test it fails and leaves icon with red X through it.. When I reboot pc. test to isp works for about 5 minutes ten fails again.I do have internet connection though it is very slow and does not find a lot of web sites.My email on outlook express seems to work ok.Now my question is should I Upgrade to 600 or would I encounter the same problems. My pc spec is well above recommended spec, running on win xp, with the Terayon cable modem on USB Port. I live in the Glasgow area.
Thanks for any help you can give.
Paul.

to the site , it would depend on what you want to do with your internet i suppose , if it is just browsing then stay where you are , if you are a regular downloader of large files then go to 600 , have you rung ntl and asked if there are any offers on at the mo ???????? , i am getting 1mb for the same price as 600k at the mo ---- paul

Hi Paul

to the forum.

first thing I'd say would be uninstall correct connect, in my opinion it is more trouble than it's worth. The speed test available from

http://www.vantage.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/v2/v2.htm

is better. If you do the test paste the results in here for us to have a look at. There is also a, less comprehensive, speed test available as a link from the front page of the forum.

Second thing is that connecting with an ethernet card (NIC) is preferable to USB, even on a good spec pc.

Thanks Gaz for the response below is a result of the speed test from the link you specified.. also the reason I would like to upgrade is that my son would like to try online gaming I was told by NTL I would need 600 or 1meg.

Section 3: Download Speed Results
Three downloads are tested; one from one of your ISPs servers, one through your Transparent Cache and one through an alterntive cache. This will give you an idea of how capable your connection is. Note: You should take the highest download speed into account.

Telewest blueyonder - 512k service Server Download:
18KB/s (144Kb/s) - Poor - this is too low

Download through Transparent Cache:
18KB/s (144Kb/s) - Poor - this is too low

Download through alternative Cache (webcache.blueyonder.co.uk):
0KB/s (0Kb/s) - **** SERVER ERROR: Unexpected error from Server****

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Section 4: Packet Loss
50 Ping Requests are sent to your server. The packet loss is measured by how many of the packets don't bounce back to the client. High packet loss may slow down your connection.
50 packets were sent, 0 bounced back; 100% loss (estimated)
Dismal - Your connection is barely working
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Section 5: Transparent Cache Page Fetch Time
This test times how long your Transparent Cache takes to fetch a page from the Internet. Please note that this test is subject to many different parameters and sometimes may not be 100% accurate. This test can be used to show delays when trying to view Internet sites. The timing takes place from the moment the request for the file is sent to the moment the proxy server responds.

Average time taken to retrieve a page: 0ms - At least one of the pages requested failed to download. This may indicate problems with your Webcache. Run the test again to confirm this.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Re: Should I upgrdade
Yikes! Those traceroutes are diabolical, Paul! Even too bad to be caused by your local server - did you have any downloads or peer-to-peer/file sharing software running when you ran that test? If so, close the software (right-click on its icon down by the clock and choose Exit/Close/Shutdown) and run the test again. If not, since you're running Windows XP I'd suggest you follow the instructions at http://www.ntlworld.com/virus/ to ensure that your machine hasn't been affected by the BLASTER/WELCHIA worms.
Re: Should I upgrdade
Hi Paul
you have got some problems, havn't you.
First thing I'd try is setting an 'explicit' proxy
more info on this, instructions on how to do it & a list of cache servers is in this link
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/robin.d...trancache.html
general principle - choose to set the one you are accessing 'transparently' first (there is a 'what's my proxy' link on the front page of the forum, near the bottom), then if that doesn't improve things try another geographically near you. It's a bit trial & error, I'm afraid, but you will be amazed at the difference once you find a proxy server that is working correctly.
If that doesn't work, I can only assume you have an oversubscibed connection - and you will have to contact customer services, to report that.
RE: upgrading, personally I would get your 150K connection running properly first - I wouldn't want to be paying the extra on the off-chance it will suddenly work better.
- let us know how you get on
Gaz
Re: Should I upgrade
I had 1 meg and found it barely adequate for 2 to game online at the same time. [Ut and CS].
If its for one to play, and one to browse only, you should manage with 600k.
How you are getting online with what you have looks pretty amazing imo.
Re: Should I upgrade
Follow Gaz's advice Paul as he says the problems you have are nothing to do with the tier of service you are on so you need to get the connection fixed first before even thinking about paying more for even faster errors.
Re: Should I upgrade
Just to conclude to this thread and maybe help for others having similar problems with disconnection and extremly slow internet. this is what I have done through the help of you all.
Used proxy server HTTP: inktomi1-ren.server.ntl.com
PORT 8080.
Exceptions 192.168*
Down loaded add/ spyware programe and deleted various files including peer to peer dependancys?
NTL BB working fine now.. maybe a combination of all.
actions helped.
