Re: Superhub 2

I've checked back a few pages on this thread just to make sure there isn't an answer to my problem.

I got a SH2 fitted on an upgrade from 20Mb to 60Mb a week ago (Fri 13th) and everything was fine until Wednesday morning when my PS3 couldn't log into my PSN account, stating a DNS error I think, but I didn't pay too much attention, I thought it was Sony messing about.

Then in the evening my wife couldn't get a wifi signal (2.4GHz) on the laptop. She was sat 3 foot from the SH2.

So I thought I'd have a look at the signal strength, and it was still broadcasting a decent strength on 2.4 & 5GHz.

So I put it into Modem mode and connected it directly to the laptop, but I had trouble with my home network. So I plugged in an old router, but it wasn't receiving anything from the SH2.

I called Virgin and they said there was a problem in the area and that they would do a reset their end and to call them back in an hour? At that point the blue double arrow was a greeny yellow colour.

I saw that they had reset the SH2 and the double arrow had turned blue again. But I still couldn't get any wired or wireless connection.

Spoke to Virgin who said it was my SH2 that had a fault and booked an engineer to visit.

They came out on Saturday morning. I had internet return probably late Thursday evening, but there was a high ping and we were getting under 40Mbps.

The "engineer" came straight in took one look at it and said there is a software fault in the area (North Bristol, BS34, BS7) and replaced it for a SH1. Now the wifi has been constant ever since. But I am wondering if this is correct? Or is it linked to this firmware roll-out?

He told me that they are looking into the problem, and said the problem was specific to Filton & Patchway, it could be a couple of weeks until the sort it out, and that they would send me out a replacement SH2 once it was sorted?

Does this sound plausible? (please excuse the long post)

I'm hugely sceptical of this. I'm not aware of any issues with the SH2.

The wireless side of the SH2 will have nothing to do with the Bristol local head end. If there was a head end problem, it would affect the modem side (the general broadband sognal) and any SH2 reset will take wireless out until a few minutes after the reset has occurred.

What problems might there be at the head end? Your segment could be connected to a Motorola BSR which is known (IMO) to have had problems at the DOCSIS level with the SH2. The tirallists had a specific TEK event (and reset) only if they were on a Motorola BSR.

That's the only thing I can think of being within the engineer's meaning and I don't see how it can affext wifi if everything else continues to work.

Re: Superhub 2

Every symptom the guy has described has nothing to do with the wifi anyway. Not unlike the millions of people who don't understand how these things work and automatically associate any internet related problem with "the wifi"

Re: Superhub 2

Sorry, my bad for rambling a bit too much.

The engineer never mentioned anything about the Wi-Fi and I didn't mean to imply that there was a problem with the wi-fi.

I could connect wirelessly to the superhub at all times, it gave me full signal strength, but I had a warning triangle to say there was no internet connection.

Also my PS3 couldn't connect to the internet and that was on a wired connection.

I could even wirelessly connect to the superhub on my phone, connecting to the 5GHz band, but again there was no internet access.

So I first tried to alter the band the hub was broadcasting on and then the signal strength. This failed to work to so restored the default settings and put it into modem mode and connected up an old wireless router I had from my previous installation.

Again my laptop could connect to it, but there was an orange warning light telling me there was a problem with the internet.

After that I connected the laptop directly to the SH2 via an ethernet cable connected to the correct port on the SH2. Nothing again.

So I restored the default settings and it started working again. Although I had a high ping and very very low connection speed. At that point I left it until the morning.

Where it continued to be slow.

After I got home from work it had failed again and I could not get any connection wired or wireless. This is when I contacted Virgin.

They mentioned something about restarting the servers and a few of the connections in my area had problems.

So when I say the wi-fi has been constant I mean that I am able to get an internet connection through wi-fi, which was not possible.

I was writing the first bit at work, so was trying to do too much at once, this time I have tried to explain it as carefully as possible.

I've made enquiries at VM and there is indeed a situation in your area close to what the engineer described that affects the SH2 when it tries to lock on to a certain upstream channel. This doesn't affect the SH1 which operates to different tolerances.

More I cannot tell you.

Interesting! I wonder what that could be. Is the SH2 less tolerant than the SH1 in certain situations, then? Is it a specific combination of things, like the UBR/BSR in play or whatever?

Re: Superhub 2

I know what it is and what's happening but would prefer to let VM formulate an explanation to which I/we can point people. I believe they are doing this.
