Erm, not sure if that's the right bit.

The whole point of this is that domain resolution was showing up as ending in virginmedia.com - if it's showing up as virginmedia.net, then that must be somewhere else in the network

Re: Broadband domain name change

Well wherever it is on "the network" it's the IP this customer line has been allocated and it's the IP I am using right now, as confirmed by traceroutes, whatismyip.com, and speedtest.net

Re: Broadband domain name change

62.253.3.136 (VM Xbox Live CDN) resolves to m8-mp6.cvx3-c.edi.dial.ntli.net - expecting the DNS names to make any sense at all is probably a tad optimistic.

Re: Broadband domain name change

Indeed, I've also seen what should be cable modem RDNS' as well as the not-yet-set.virginmedia.net on random core network routers in the middle of traceroute too. Probably just re-used or re-purposed I ranges somebody was too lazy to update the DNS for.

Re: Broadband domain name change

Changed from *-virginmedia.com to *.virginm.net this evening. Unexpectedly so. Now locked out of my website as the ftp was tied to my virginmedia.com rDNS. God knows why it was tied to the hostname not the IP (which hasn't changed).

Its gonna be morning till I can get technical support to make relevant changes. Thanks virgin, you could given me some notice, or done it during the day when I had a chance of getting hold of technical support at my host...

Now I don't care about this change but do VM know that? I've received no letter or email telling me about it. Mine is currently unchanged so perhaps they will let me know before it does. They certainly send me plenty of junk mail suggesting I may like to become a customer.

Re: Broadband domain name change

99.9% of customers won't care about this change, does Virgin really need to notify them all? It's well known that it's a dynamic service, you shouldn't be tying anything to your IP or host name as it can change.

Re: Broadband domain name change

No need imo but commenting that there had been a weeks notice when it only appeared as a post on the forum is a pretty dumb comment (again imo).

Re: Broadband domain name change

I have to agree with Kush on this one. I would love to see the <deleted> in India try and deal with the flood of calls which would occur as a result of a letter being sent to everyone customer stating that:

"Starting on Wednesday we're changing the naming convention we use in our network to help differentiate between the domain which hosts the IP address ranges allocated to our customers and the domain which hosts our websites.

This will likely only impact those of you who have customised network server configurations which rely on this DNS name, such as remote server access control lists, as you will need to update your settings. If you don't know what this means, then it's unlikely you will see any impact.

In technical terms, the IP addresses will no longer fall within the virginmedia.com DNS domain, but will soon resolve to the virginm.net domain. This change will be rolled out across our network between the 16th and 25th of October."

Re: Broadband domain name change

Cable Forum's connection detector thingy like many people, will not have known about this change. Notification via a single forum posting, is not really notification. Ultimately another good example of communication from a company specialising in communication.

I'm quite sure there are a few IT bods out there scratching their head wondering why something isn't working anymore, when it had done so well for years. I rate as low the chances of them stumbling on VM's forum post, where they are often at pains to indicate they don't support business services, when businesses are quite likely to be the ones running stuff tied to fixed IP's and domains.

We will look at "fixing" the site's connection tool in due course, but it won't be a priority.

Honest question then. How would you have done it?

Re: Broadband domain name change

I've have done it the epically overkill way by pulling logs of everyone who had actually accessed the RDNS in the last 30 days and contacting them specifically.

Do you know how it actually works because I am confused why/how it is broken. I would have assumed that it looks at what your ip is and sees whether it is in a block of ip addresses owned by VM. As our ip addreses have stayed the same it should still see it as a VM address. Or does it just look at the host info cpc24-linc11-2-0-custxxx.xx-x.cable.virginmedia.com and say "oh yeah, it ends in .virginmedia.com therefore it is a VM address?

As business broadband is seperate from residential I defo think an email or letter should have gone out to all business accounts and then they could have decided whether it would affect them or not. Making a post on a forum for residential customers which VM admit to it not affecting so much is a poor attempt at comunication. It is like Tesco's telling you that you can't pay for your shopping by card anymore and making the announcement on a chat forum on their website; it isn't the most informative method.
