Re: Broadband domain name change
Why virginm.net and not virginmedia.net like the rest of the network?
|
Re: Broadband domain name change
Sorry I don't know what this means but as I (apparently) use opendns and a VPN will this matter to me? (so I am told I do anyway)

If you however run a VPN server on your home network so you can connect to it while you are out, it could affect you if you set the remote client to connect to something like customer53453-cpc3-blah-blah.virginmedia.net. If you had just set the IP address instead it will be ok. |
Re: Broadband domain name change
Thanks for the reply.
No I don't do that. I have used logmein in the past which I assume would jsut work anyway without a vpn. I just use it because I am always paranoid people can see what I am going and whilst I am not doing anything illegal I just want that extra 2 layers of security that my VPN gives me On my phone I have the VPN set up anyway so I can use it when I am using my mobile connection or public wifi |
Re: Broadband domain name change
This is one of those changes that will affect very, very few people, if any really. As Qtx said, if you had something pointing at customer53453-cpc3-blah-blah.virginmedia.net then you'd be better off just pointing to the IP address or using a dynamic DNS client or something anyway.

Re: Broadband domain name change
But if it does effect you, the short notice is a bit of a pain in the arse.

Re: Broadband domain name change
Maybe they will tidy up some of the other DNS names, like the internal CDN nodes that resolve to old NTL dialup hostnames in Edinburgh.

Re: Broadband domain name change
Yuck.
|
Re: Broadband domain name change
Will our IP address change or remain the same?
|
Re: Broadband domain name change
Hopefully they'll finally get rid of the silly crap like host-94-175-249-241.not-set-yet.virginmedia.net

Re: Broadband domain name change
Well I don't know about anyone else's, but mine has changed and my IP is still the same:
