Broadband domain name change

For those that haven't seen this

Quote:

Starting on Wednesday we're changing the naming convention we use in our network to help differentiate between the domain which hosts the IP address ranges allocated to our customers and the domain which hosts our websites.

This will likely only impact those of you who have customised network server configurations which rely on this DNS name, such as remote server access control lists, as you will need to update your settings. If you don't know what this means, then it's unlikely you will see any impact.

In technical terms, the IP addresses will no longer fall within the virginmedia.com DNS domain, but will soon resolve to the virginm.net domain. This change will be rolled out across our network between the 16th and 25th of October.

Why virginm.net and not virginmedia.net like the rest of the network?

Sorry I don't know what this means but as I (apparently) use opendns and a VPN will this matter to me? (so I am told I do anyway)

It should make no difference if you just use a vPN on your computer to view/download the internet. OpenDNS is not an issue either

If you however run a VPN server on your home network so you can connect to it while you are out, it could affect you if you set the remote client to connect to something like customer53453-cpc3-blah-blah.virginmedia.net. If you had just set the IP address instead it will be ok.

Thanks for the reply.

No I don't do that. I have used logmein in the past which I assume would jsut work anyway without a vpn.

I just use it because I am always paranoid people can see what I am going and whilst I am not doing anything illegal I just want that extra 2 layers of security that my VPN gives me

On my phone I have the VPN set up anyway so I can use it when I am using my mobile connection or public wifi

This is one of those changes that will affect very, very few people, if any really. As Qtx said, if you had something pointing at customer53453-cpc3-blah-blah.virginmedia.net then you'd be better off just pointing to the IP address or using a dynamic DNS client or something anyway.

But if it does effect you, the short notice is a bit of a pain in the arse.

Maybe they will tidy up some of the other DNS names, like the internal CDN nodes that resolve to old NTL dialup hostnames in Edinburgh.

Will our IP address change or remain the same?

Re: Broadband domain name change

Hopefully they'll finally get rid of the silly crap like host-94-175-249-241.not-set-yet.virginmedia.net

Because to be honest, I'm not that bothered if someone figures it out. The worst that could happen is I'll get DDoS'd, in which case I'll just change IP's. What do I lose, other than 5mins of my time and my current TBB graphs.
