Mixed feelings, I suppose it's positive that an author has succeeded to ignite the interests of the nation's children and children who read books, yes, even Harry Potter, are preferable to louts who would otherwise disturb the neighbourhood! So in a way can't be a bad thing, but like others one gets tired of the media circus who in a desert of sensationalism need to draw attention to some other issue. Never read Harry Potter myself, prefer writers like the late Patrick O'Brien but I'm fascinated by seeing the excitement that children have, God bless them, who want to read it.

Is the whole idea not just ripped off the kids program "the worst witch" that was about when I was a kid, long before Mr Potter.

The important point is that many children are excited about Harry Potter, it's great to see so many children wanting to read, that can only be positive.

I've finished it. It was amazing.

Not saying anymore as it'll spoil it for people that haven't read it. Just waiting for the boyfriend to finish reading his, so we can discuss the book!

There was a big crate of 'em in the supermarket yesterday, so purchased a copy. They were disappearing at a modest rate, but there was no feeding frenzy at the trough.

I finished it this morning. This book was aimed more at teenagers. The characters are no longer black & white. The good guys are fallible. There are some love interests, although nothing steamy.

Reading the first books brought on a feeling of nostalgia for those early school days, when 'O' levels were years away, homework was modest & life was simpler. This book reminded me more of my uncertain teenage years and didn't provide the escapism offered by the earlier books, nor the mature viewpoint provided by books intended for adults. It was like being a teenager again; no longer a child, yet not yet an adult.

I have bought a copy.
Although will not be reading it as it is a first edition (ok doesn't mean much at the mo but in a few years mmm..) It could be worth a few bob.

I havn't read any of the books but agree that it is better for the kids to be reading the books rather than getting square eyes watching the tv or staring at a computer monitor for hours on end.

I prefer the lord of the rings, although being a hard read at first, once you have read the first few chapters it becomes much easier.
