In a word.....No

not entirely true, imo - the reply needs qualifying ??
- for a new '4 meg' connection I believe the upload is 400Kb/s ?
- as I understand posts made previously about this, the hfc network is more prone to saturation on the return path, so 'permanently' uploading files, at that rate, may be significant if many subscribers try using the same resource, for the same thing?
- as ever, area dependent

Re: Torrent uploads
You shouldn't, I forgot I was seeding a torrent once and left it up and running for about 3 days, went away for the weekend and left my machine on.
Uploaded about 5-6gig and not had a *******ing yet......just make sure you change the deafult port your torrent client is running on.

I was commenting on the original post....answer, no here. I'm new to the bittorent client thingy.....since I first used azureus in feb this year, I've had no probs leaving the pc on seeding for days. 200 gb in 4 months uploaded. Well within the recent rules now obselete. I pay good money for a service and ntl provide that service. Don't really see what the problem is....

I see the winking smiley, but I always find prejudice against the Bittorrent protocol odd.
The same arguments can be made against downloading/uploading anything using HTTP, FTP, NNTP etc. There's nothing special about Bittorrent.
In fact, there's much more in the way of "illegal" material available on Usenet, but how often do you hear people condemning NNTP?
|
I use usenet and NNTP sucks too.The only thing makes it worth using is the good old nzb

Re: Torrent uploads
If your seeding 24/7 which my server does 365. set your maximum upload speed nice and low mine is 5k a sec... this means you help the community more by keeping the link alive longer but dont go soaking up all the bandwidth. It also has the added benefit of not degrading your normal activities..

Re: Torrent uploads
did everyone miss this then, it seems P2P is good enough for NTL to use.

"ntl and BitTorrent in joint technology trial "
“ntl is delighted to be working with its technology trial partners, BitTorrent and CacheLogic, in order to extend its high-quality video experience from the set top box to the media player,” said Kevin Baughan, director of network strategy at ntl. “The trial will be a unique combination of BitTorrent’s P2P client closely coupled with CacheLogic’s network based content caching and ntl’s deep fibre network in order to offer a transformational video downloading experience.”
“Through this partnership, we can jointly evaluate how P2P distribution can be a highly efficient mechanism to deliver truly compelling licensed content to broadband subscribers, whilst satisfying the economic requirements of the content owner and the network provider,” said Andrew Parker, CTO of CacheLogic. "
'The trial is expected to go ahead in April 2006.'

In answer to the OP I have never had a problem with leaving BT running 24/7, and have never had any contact regarding my usage

every torrent site I come across only asks users upload to maintain 1:1 ratio they dont ask people to upload 24/7, thats the main point I was coming across.

Re: Torrent uploads
if you take a large file then it might take a couple of days to upload 1:1 and if a large number of people drop off as soon as they get there then the people still d/l the file might only get it very slowly.
That is why it can be helpful to leave it running a bit longer.
I do not condone people u/l huge numbers as this might stop some getting there ratio.
To call it 'immoral' is way over the top IMHO
