am i likely to incur the wrath of NTL if i leave my connection permanently uploading torrents?
i konw it's now officially 'unlimited' but is it likely it would upset them?

i don't NEED to keep seeding. in the same way i don't NEED an internet connection, or NEED to go on holidays. i just think it's nice to.

Seeding is what keeps the torrent alive. Other people had to seed so that you could download your files successfully. If you don't seed, you're a leecher.

I'm also struggling to see what's "immoral" about it.

I see the winking smiley, but I always find prejudice against the Bittorrent protocol odd.

The same arguments can be made against downloading/uploading anything using HTTP, FTP, NNTP etc. There's nothing special about Bittorrent.

In fact, there's much more in the way of "illegal" material available on Usenet, but how often do you hear people condemning NNTP?

They have an unwritten rule a while ago (don't know if its changed) that if you upload more than 300 meg in one day, they don't like it. It was never written and fixed like with the previous cap, but some people recieved letters warning them for abuse of service. Some go well over that and never get letters, some hardly do and do get letters. They only chase it up there are problems in the local area

Its not using the connection 24/7 they are bothered about, only that you'll go over 300meg.

If I was you, i'd do it, but set the upload under 300meg/day. That way you should be in the clear regardless. Besides, saturating your upload will slow down browsing, etc.

its immoral that you tying up shared badnwidth on your ubr for a 24 hour period, I guess me and you disagree if you dont think thats immoral.

I dont find it immoral to not seed a torrent since its either illegal or the legal torrents tend to have permenant fast seeds on them anyway.

Do you also need to seed 24:7 to get 1:1 ratio?

nntp/ftp/http are all much lighter on resourse usage then p2p in both that they require much less upload bandwidth (acks only) and lower pps.

What I fnd immoral is me using my "unlimited" broadband however I see fit, only to find there are the tiniest of tiny bits of smallprint even daring to mention these restrictions.

I uploaded a LOT at one point, and I figure that if NTL could only ever supply me with roughly 40% of my supposed speed, then I couldn't be bothered caring whether the already oversubscribed line got any worse.

In answer to the OP I have never had a problem with leaving BT running 24/7, and have never had any contact regarding my usage
