Well the planned launch date might not happen, that was expected. But sky offering 2tb and virgin offering 1tb that's not good, current superhub won't fit In my tv shelf

Or that they will connect by WiFi to each other.

The BBC is not all about entertainment. Education and learning is a key part of its remit and that falls into the category of public good as you have explained above.

As I understand things, the new box will be Eos with Tivo software loaded on it and likely cloud based. So perhaps a higher capacity really than 1Tb if it just pulls in on-demand content for some "recordings" but maybe with a 1Tb hard drive for those recordings that will not be available on-demand?

There was indeed support for the licence fee but this isn't why it was retained for the time being. Your comment that the BBC could not provide the same service on a subscription that is equivalent to the licence fee doesn't make sense, unless of course you believe that hordes of people would not subscribe. Which rather goes against the idea that the BBC has overwhelming support, doesn't it?

For the record, I do believe that the BBC commands a lot of support from the public and that most would, in fact subscribe. But that doesn't take away from the argument that those who do not watch or listen should not be compelled to pay.

A subscription service would give people choice, ensure that time, cost and energy in checking that people not paying were not watching TV would no longer be expended and viewers who did not pay ceased to get away with it.

A subscription service introduces a high ongoing cost which needs to be covered somehow. What about most homes that don't have pay TV services? A one-off substantial investment would be required to establish a charging mechanism for these homes.
For the record, of Sky's £20 base pack, the majority goes on marketing, encryption, admin, equipment subsidies so the licence fee would have to rise to cover some of these costs or further services would have to be cut.
So, it's not a simple case of rebranding the licence fee to a subscription fee and assuming costs stay the same. They don't.
