Not exactly a glowing report!
Surely with DOCSIS used elsewhere, they could have found an excellent device "off the peg" and just done the usual "lock half the menus" thing, or is it a case of "how cheap can you build it" ... now take something else out!

4/5 stars surely is decent enough? And besides, reading the review their main criticism is that it's "largely featureless" which is exactly what you're saying - get an existing piece of equipment that's decent and lock half of the menus. Sounds like that's what Virgin has actually done.

On the face of it I did the right thing upgrading from my WNDR3700 to the Asus RT N66U, because the SH2 despite its superior wireless performance just doesn't have the features I require in a router, eg to be able to tunnel through to media on my USB drive whilst out and about. I will continue in SH2 modem-only mode for the foreseeable future.
VM had a difficult balance to strike. For most folk they got it right. SH2 will serve a wired or multiple wireless networks admirably, outdoing Home hub 4 or 5 even on wireless perhaps. It appears that the new home hub has better USB functionality though and also 4 gigabit ports.

Perhaps VM should also be promoting the SH2 as if guys have their brains in their pants. Imagine that! Sexy ads demonstrating the girl-pulling power of Superhub 2. The ombudsman can't shoot you down for fantasy claims, whereas, VM, you can be shot down for technical claims.
Edit.............................................. ...................
I just watched Chad's link to Channel 5 Gadget Show. It appears that VM and BT cannot be separated on WiFi performance. Time for BT to stop promoting theirs as the best WiFi perhaps? BT's FTTP 300Mb and their Home Hub 5 could change all that. Wake up Virgin!

Superhub 2 and BT's hub are pretty much neck and neck in terms of performance.

Re: superhub 2
Roughbeast has it right. Modem mode for the reasons he provides.
There would have been no customer based reason for VM to slug the SH2 router features; I suspect it's a licensing cost issue between VM and Netgear.

Will be modem mode for me too when the testing done and we have a 'stable' firmware.

Yup, I am in the same situation here - SH2 with N66U and I'm very happy. Like yourself, I wanted the extra features that only a high-end router like the Asus can provide. I don't think it's reasonable to assume that an ISP will invest in that kind of equipment for all of their users, though, especially given that at least 90% (probably more) won't ever touch those extra features and those that do will generate a lot more support calls. It's better to focus on what those users need, which is basically stable, reliable and speedy wireless.

Re: superhub 2
Since getting V26 firmware on 1st August there is a vast improvement of the TBB graph, although the spiky visual issue from previous firmwares never seemed to impair my connection.

Re: superhub 2
Ah.. OK, thanks for replying my graph looks like your 23, be nice to have a more stable connection, but hopefully that will be when I get the re-pull with the RG11 to sort my power levels.

Ignore what your graph looks like it shouldn't affect your connection (on the SH2), atleast that is what the trialists are reporting.
