Re: Could you live without your sky or virgin box?

I have had Sky and NTL in the past. I don't miss them. I don't watch enough TV for the subscription to be worth the money.

I couldn't live without my Sky+HD box, the recording feature and series links I would miss most

I do live without them. I have no TV license. I refuse to pay for all the brainless schlock that passes for entertainment these days.

Although, I did look into getting Virgin TV (and a license) a few weeks ago but I would only want it for the documentary channels and you need an expensive package to get all of them, so I didn't bother. If Virgin ever did a truly custom package, where you can choose exactly which channels you want, I would be there in a flash.

I just got some food for thought then !

Must admit, I love my Tivo box, well, I used to, until my children got hold of it and it started recording all their programmes automatically. I cant get it to stop because I'm old and can't figure it out. They say they can't either, but I know they can.. They sit in the sofa pointing and laughing at the old man who can't work out modern day technology.

You'd best to get a media streaming box then ThunderPants, as like myself & others, heres the thing, you don't need a TV licence just good internet connection & cable to your TV analogue or digital (myself analogue). There a few on the market, why miss out or plan you day around the programming schedule than watch it when you like & how you like; that what IPTV media box does. Just think of the money your saving + what else you could spend it on.

If I had to give up my PVR, and pay TV, I'd look to get a Samsung Smart TV:

http://www.samsung.com/uk/tvapps/

BBC iPlayer, ITV On Demand, 4 OD and Demand 5 would help for catching missed programs. Lovefilm, Netflix, Picturebox, Blinkbox, YouTube and Spotify also provide alternative viewing options.

Same here. We noticed that our subs with Sky were getting on for almost £50 a month.

When we looked at what we had in the planner we realised that 95% of the stuff we had on series link was on the terrestrial channels.

So we went down the FreeSat route and have not looked back, the only channels I miss are the Discovery ones, oh and the Formula 1.

Pretty much this. I already do it bar having SkyHD for football. If I wasnt so fussy money could be saved.

Just flicking through the threads here ThunderPants, saw your good question..
here goes; how it works >

Just as a normal topset box you have outside connection most well know it as the ariel socket (freeview) or sat connection (freesat) which carries the signals from the ariel/satellite to the digital top set box. The only thing is different on IPTV Stb is the outside connection you use the internet instead in a form of a ethernet connector/lead or wireless device

There's many models & brands you can pick from, me myself I have WDTV live hard wired (connected) with cat 6 ethernet cable to my internet connection no more than that, same TV I had before using the AV port + cable provided, just another remote to add to my collection...I can say it all works quite well; while others have ruku, boxybox etc but they all do the same thing, you have to pick one that's right for you. STB 's like WDTV do have cracked firmware that you expand it use like other IPTV STB's

The whole bonus of this is you pick & choose where you want to watch the said programmes.... oh yes you can do all this TV licence free The investment you put in getting all necessary equipment will pay itself of in the first year alone, just think what you can use the rest of that money on the rest of the years.....

I upgraded my connection speed with some of the change & still had some left over to play with.

Any questions at all ThunderPants73, I'll try to answer them best I can + happy to help out another in search of a sort after answer.

peace out

Toonlight

Oh great they've made themselves premade targets for throwing rotting food at them, if they dare to knock my door....hehe

I'd give the same advise too, there pure utter **** of the earth the lowest of the low beating the street...knocking doors for their £20.00 commission & they'll do anything for it from what I seen + saw.... many don't it doesn't happen? Just look at Youtube for *tvl goon* then laugh at there actions.. I do with their lies & petty hopeless threats........ Their classic lines is

"if you don't tell me; I'll come back with a search warrant"
"We need the information to update our data base"
"it's the law, you need a TV licence if you have a TV"

BTW you don't need a TV licence for a computer, it's void under the 2003 ruling, the devil is in the detail.

Keep a camera at hand ready to record them in their acts watch them run away.

Basic rules are NO CONTACT at all

No contacting them
No signing there 178 form
Not giving any details
Take no notice of there threat-o-letters - bin them

Finally they have no power to enforce anything, there just plain old sales people. Remember that & you'll be LLF for life

Have fun folks....

I find that the program description when using the sky app on ipad often gives the season# and ep#. This is a great help in avoiding previously viewed content.

However, traditionally, at this time of the year new media of a decent quality is indeed thin on the ground.
