Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 1.
SKY Atlantic is the best channel not only on British TV but the whole wide world. Viewing figures are so low because the channel is too cool to be proper mainstream. That's why Virgin or BT will never get the channel. It's reserved for cool cats like Muppetman and I. If you ain't happy about that, write a letter to your local MP or somethin'

That was the point I was trying to address when I stated I am not sure if shows on a channel which garner 2-3% of the potential viewing audience could be classed as "popular"...
|
But in the context of this thread, Qtx is correct in what he stated in that the addition of Sky Atlantic to VM is a popular request on this thread, which infers that it would be a popular channel on VM.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 1.
Regarding Sky Atlantic: maybe VM should obtain it from Sky like they get BoxNation ie a monthly fee; this way people who want SA can have it (albet at a price) and those that do not want it don't subscribe... just a idea so don't shoot me...

Ten million subscribers to Sky means closer to 3 or 4 times that number who actually live in a household which has Sky.
But viewing figures are only really a small part of the story here - Sky estimate the channel drives a quarter of its new subscriptions, and I'm sure somebody will trot out the usual arguments about time shift viewing. It has a value to Sky in excess of its audience share and advertising revenue.

I would imagine Sky value its deal for shows on a total viewership over the life of the deal , the BARB figures only represent live viewing plus 7 day time shifted viewing , Sky now regularly put their content on its OD service as full boxsets they also tend to run the previous series a few weeks before the new series airs , Game of thrones series one also picked VM viewers up when it aired on Sky One and further down the line shows can air on Pick TV as an example the Orignal Stike Back series aired on Pick TV.

What you suggest is a good idea, but I am pretty sure that the deal between Sky and HBO prevents that happening.
Many TV shows have first run and second run rights, where a pay TV channel shows it first and a Freeview TV channel shows it a year or so later. Castle is an example; Alibi show it first and channel 5 show it later. I can't think of any Sky show, that is first shown on a Sky pay TV channel and then shown on a non Sky freeview channel later. So it looks as if Sky buys both first and second run rights to all the shows they buy. Plus, HBO seem to like to restrict how their content is shown, so that isn't likely to help.
|
Cheers for the info. Sure hope that HBO doesn't start a trend with the extreme restrictions. They do make (and have made) some great series so I guess this has given them more leverage in any deals.
The media world is so cut throat due to the money to be made. Not pleasant at all

Surely the Original HBO in America would be superior to Sky Atlantic?
