Fifth of primaries full or overcrowded, figures show

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-11618982

Quote:
More than one in five of England's primary schools are full to bursting point, government statistics reveal.
Some 20.3% of state primaries, 3,444 in total, are full or have more pupils than they should, Department for Education figures show.
Quote:
It follows claims any schools funding increases from the spending review will be wiped out by rising pupil numbers.
Analysis by the Institute of Fiscal Studies suggests per pupil funding will fall in real terms by 0.6% per year because of expected increases in pupil numbers.
Quote:
A survey earlier this month suggested that thousands of children were still waiting to be allocated a school place a month after the new autumn term started, as councils in many areas faced problems accommodating them.
Sigh! It seems that when they started closing schools back in the last century because of a falling number of children being born that my question of what happens if the birth rate goes up have been answered.

Back to square one basically.

They're still closing schools here despite the level of immigration of families with children.

The trouble is it all seems to be based on political dogma: when they reopen they reopen as Welsh language schools which (despite what they say) the local population does not appear to "demand". It's "like it or lump it" basically.....

They rebuilding schools around here, making them bigger. Rushed the plans through or something so the government couldn't take away the funding

Re: Fifth of primaries full or overcrowded, figures show

A secondary super-school opened last September across the road from my apartment, on the same site there is a primary super-school being built now - the buggers woke me up this morning on a precious day off!

These super-schools tend to house a number of previous old schools and are very state of the art.
