Why are the north and south poles not visualized on google earth? Presumably there are satellite images of those locations......

Probably because the planes the companies use to do the mapping are not suitable to go over the poles..

To some extent, but for close up stuff, they use planes (AFAIK)

Fair nuff, but if they can't fly planes over the north pole then use satellite data.
Take a look, it's really strange how google earth just stops at a radius of 823 km
from the south pole.
