Wouldn't worry too much, our Acer lappie is going strong after 2 years. On the other hand I work with Dells and really wouldn't start looking at them, familiarity breeding contempt I suppose.

Cheers guys
if you ever want to speed this one up. its an easy processes to change the CPU.

have upgrade two now to a T7250 with the faster FSB.

acer made some big mistakes with there mother boards and chipsets
the aspire 5315 being the best and easiest laptop to upgrade from celeron to T9500.
all cpu,s can be purchased cheap on ebay.

my travelmate 230 is 5 years old and still as good as the day i got it

i also have aspire7112,aspire 5315 with t9300(upgrade).
also aspire7110 with T5300(upgrade) both Ex celeron single core to c2d.
it so easy to upgrade the 5313 only 11 screws and you turn a low end laptop into something worth £200/£300 more for less £100.

I don't really have a clue
A netbook and an external dvd writer will most likely be ok for you.

From ebuyer,
Netbook - £150
USB2 IDE external enclosure - £10
IDE DVD Writer - £15
