Re: Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon Released Today

Well downloaded the ISO - tested it - wiped the partition with XP and then tried to install it and all I get get is my monitor saying it can't display that video mode.

Tried it with different video modes and in safe mode but no dice.

You can load the live cd up in normal mode ok though shaun??
When are you getting this message, after you reboot into your fresh installation i assume.
What video card do you have and how are you trying the differnt modes??
By logging out to a terminal i`m assuming

- Hit control-alt-F1..log in?
- type "sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg"
- Accept all defaults except driver... choose the safe VESA driver for now mabey?
- Hit control-alt-F7
- Hit control-alt-delete

Sorry if you`ve tried all that as you seem to be saying?

Ah, right, so using my earlier analogy, C-F would be like the whole Stardock suite? [again, hopefully without the other one's drawbacks]

What about when you boot into XP? Do you see anything before the login screen, e.g. the BIOS info, etc? If not, search for a thread started by me, with LCD in the title, & follow the steps listed there.

Re: Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon Released Today

Right at the very end of the installation Alien the Grub setup will detect any other OS`s and will have them listed in a text style menu(grub) at boot up.

Ubuntu will be top of the list & will start automatically but you will have a set amount of time to choose XP instead if you prefer.Of course you can also alter your menu.lst to make XP start automatically, if you so prefer......tch

You will still have your bios screen and the grub one will follow directly afterwards.
The whole concept of different window managers etc can be completely alien at first but i would just concentrate on plain ole k/Ubuntu at first and forget about the bells & whilstles until you get a feel for the basics.

EDIT:Of course CompizF itself comes by default and will be up & running as soon as you install your drivers.Unless you have some older ATI one that plays nice with the default drivers & CF.

No - I'm getting it just before it shows the desktop.

Had the same issue with fawn but fived it by choosing 1024x768 and selecting safe graphiscs mode.

No from the start screen on the install for the live CD

Do you think this could help?

Yep - everything is fine before the Live CD starts - my last install of fawn went fine. Dunno why this is different.

Sorry about that,i just assumed from the "tested it....then tried to install" that you had got that far.

You did`nt mention what video card you had but mabey trying an alternate cd might help. It`s just a text based installer with no live environment though so you cant "try" before you buy as it were.
I always use them myself.

You could try some of the numerous boot options here mabey.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootOptions
EDIT

What hardware are you using...that might help somebody to help you

Re: Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon Released Today

I'm using a PNY Verto Geforce 6600GT.

I'm getting as far as the screen shown in the link you gave xpod but after that I get the loading scroll bar then once that fills all the way up I just get the message my monitor generates. Even if I change the resolution option on the first screen.

P.S. I meant tested eh CD had burnt correctly

I`m as bad as you ......not answering your questions
My young daughter just puked on me & my keyboard though ...thats my excuse anyway

That would have just got us loading the safe driver on your installation......which you dont have of course and choosing safe mode when just booting the live cd is doing that anyway.

I know what the Grub is, I was attempting to ascertain if Shaun was having the same prob with his graphics card & monitors that I had a little while ago, & was hardware related; nothing specific to Linux, as I hadn't even tried a Live CD on this system at that point.

It probably isn't the same thing that happened to me then.

lol
sorry
Too many young women in my ears atm.......i`m not paying attention where it counts apparently

@Shaun...If you know you are going to install then i`d try that alternate cd,it will aviod any graphics issues till you at least get an installation to work with.
Live environments dont always play ball, even with compatible hardware.

Nah, I see that occasionally too. I think it just means something hasn't loaded properly. Reload page from server [Ctrl+F5 in Firefox, IE, & Maxthon] usually sorts it.

I've had that before, if a forced refresh doesn't fix it clearing the cache usually does.

Oh, that, yeah. That's just when the images haven't loaded. Perhaps timed out loading them, & as a result Opera displayed the alternate text for each image that didn't load. The CF server was a bit busy earlier & got a little bogged down to the extent that 1 time I got a message saying the server was too busy & to try again soon, & another the page loaded but without the stylesheet [plain text on a white background].

I've seen weirder than that happen, but it's kinda hard to describe. The next time it happens I'll try & remember to grab a screenshot.
