The good news is that existing DVD collections will not be made redundant. Both types of player can cope with older DVDs and CDs.
|
Thats a bit of good news at least.....

Which is why I won't be buying either of them until it's clear who wins the format war. When will they learn ...

Re: Here we go again
The problem here is that different film producers are following different types,This will create the problem of production. At the end of the day a Dvd 9 carries enough data for a bloody good image and sound,To get the most out of blue ray and hd dvd you need a hd tv and you will need a new hi fi carrying the new hi def sound with even more speakers and more sound

Re: Here we go again
I dont think either will prosper. People are quite happy with dvd and theres no real motivation for a change

no but in this case I see it as a possibility. These new formats are going to be splitting the film companies. They will not be selling there movies in both formats.and as for trusting that quantity of data to a single disc horrifies me (when burners come out)
And as my above link shows theres a new contender in the form of holographic dvd which will hold a hugely larger quantity of infromation

I think that too.
Its way too early to change the DVD format. I would give it atleast another five years.
Most people dont have HD-TV's and as has been said, a whole range of new equipment would be needed.
The first models will be priced sky high so I doubt anyone will be able to afford it until a good while.
It reminds me a bit when the huge vinyl sized laser discs came out. Very expensive machines and then eventually got replaced by the DVD.

I'm sure the motivation can be generated soon enough.
All it takes is for the industry to start releasing the much-wanted stuff on a new format, or to reduce the DVD output significantly, and people will be very quick to start buying.
With the 'limited' storage capacity (e.g. DVD vs. hard disk) a new format offering higher data density will always be popular in some circles.
And with the new format, I have no doubt there is even more scope for the industry to thwart the copiers - another likely reason the industry will put it's weight behind it.

Re: Here we go again
People might not necessarily replace their DVD players, but a helluva lot of people will be buying either a PS3 or an XBox360. The PS3 will have a Blu-Ray drive by default, and the XBox360 will soon support an external HD-DVD drive. Although these will initially be used primarily for gaming purposes, it's not inconceivable that they will also help with the acceptance/integration for watching films too.
Imagine the scenario where you have a PS3 with a built-in Blu-Ray drive already hooked-up to your Hi-Def TV which is capable of playing the latest Hollywood blockbusters... would you necessarily want to also splash-out on buying a HD-DVD player that only offers the same functionality that your PS3 can offer? The same goes for any XBox360 owners with external HD-DVD drives... they won't want to buy a Blu-Ray player.
Whichever console takes off as being the market dominator may, imo, help shape the future of these 2 video players.

Re: Here we go again
I think we may be quite far into digital distirbution by the time these formats become true contenders to the dvd.

you will need both to play all movies as I have said movie companies are supporting different formats so to watch all movies in hi definition you will need either both consoles of both players
