Re: Here we go again
The problem here is that different film producers are following different types,This will create the problem of production. At the end of the day a Dvd 9 carries enough data for a bloody good image and sound,To get the most out of blue ray and hd dvd you need a hd tv and you will need a new hi fi carrying the new hi def sound with even more speakers and more sound

Re: Here we go again
I dont think either will prosper. People are quite happy with dvd and theres no real motivation for a change

And as my above link shows theres a new contender in the form of holographic dvd which will hold a hugely larger quantity of infromation |
Re: Here we go again
I think that too.
Its way too early to change the DVD format. I would give it atleast another five years. Most people dont have HD-TV's and as has been said, a whole range of new equipment would be needed. The first models will be priced sky high so I doubt anyone will be able to afford it until a good while. It reminds me a bit when the huge vinyl sized laser discs came out. Very expensive machines and then eventually got replaced by the DVD. |

All it takes is for the industry to start releasing the much-wanted stuff on a new format, or to reduce the DVD output significantly, and people will be very quick to start buying. With the 'limited' storage capacity (e.g. DVD vs. hard disk) a new format offering higher data density will always be popular in some circles. And with the new format, I have no doubt there is even more scope for the industry to thwart the copiers - another likely reason the industry will put it's weight behind it. |
Re: Here we go again
People might not necessarily replace their DVD players, but a helluva lot of people will be buying either a PS3 or an XBox360. The PS3 will have a Blu-Ray drive by default, and the XBox360 will soon support an external HD-DVD drive. Although these will initially be used primarily for gaming purposes, it's not inconceivable that they will also help with the acceptance/integration for watching films too.
Imagine the scenario where you have a PS3 with a built-in Blu-Ray drive already hooked-up to your Hi-Def TV which is capable of playing the latest Hollywood blockbusters... would you necessarily want to also splash-out on buying a HD-DVD player that only offers the same functionality that your PS3 can offer? The same goes for any XBox360 owners with external HD-DVD drives... they won't want to buy a Blu-Ray player. Whichever console takes off as being the market dominator may, imo, help shape the future of these 2 video players. |
Re: Here we go again
I think we may be quite far into digital distirbution by the time these formats become true contenders to the dvd.
