MTU setting

Can anyone tell me the recommended MTU setting for Cable please...
I'm getting major packet loss of upto 26% after only being on TS for a few seconds and then ppl break up can be really anoying in the heat of a battle...

Also getting pings on BF2 on UK/Euro servers of between 25 and 40 where others are getting around 10-20 max...

NTL 250 connected to Netgear RP614 router & 10 meg service, using Dr TCP to adjust MTU values and other settings..

Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Hazz.....

Re: MTU setting

MTU is set on your PC, not the modem. It should be 1500.

Run the tweak tester from:

see if it can help.

Re: MTU setting

After running the dsl tweak test you have to input some data i.e service provider, O/S that sort of stuff, where i get stuck is on the connection type which do i pick ethernet, WINXPpppoe, routerpppoe or normal ?.

these are the results with WINXPpppoe

1. Your Tweakable Settings:
Receive Window (RWIN): 65535
Window Scaling: off
Path MTU Discovery: ON
RFC1323 Window Scaling: OFF
RFC1323 Time Stamping: OFF
Selective Acks: ON
MSS requested: 1460
TTL:131
(less any hops behind firewall)
TTL remaining: 120
TOS/TOS subfield: 0
TOS/Flags:
2. Test 491101 byte download
Actual data bytes sent: 491101
Actual data packets: 338
Max packet sent (MTU): 1500
Max packet recd (MTU): 1500
Retransmitted data packets: 0
sacks you sent: 2
pushed data pkts: 48
data transmit time: 3.316 secs
our max idletime: 1469.5 ms
transfer rate: 134695 bytes/sec
transfer rate: 1077 kbits/sec
This is not a speed test!
transfer efficiency:
100%
3. ICMP (ping) check
Minimum ping: 87.36 ms
Maximum ping: 116.33 ms
Ping stability:
89.77 116.33 87.54 88.21 88.60 88.77 89.44 90.05 87.36 90.97

Notes and recommendations:
Check FAQ on MTU for XP (FAQ #2252) both of these i keep getting.
Input line speed for RWIN recommendation
Looking good

Notes and recommendations:
Good data stream (no/few rexmits)
1 second+ stall detected (FAQ #1606)

Notes and recommendations:
Looking good

transfer rate: 642 kbits/sec
This is not a speed test!
transfer efficiency: 100%
3. ICMP (ping) check
Minimum ping: 86.63 ms
Maximum ping: 105.40 ms
Ping stability:
88.46 90.98 87.41 86.63 89.33 105.40 86.99 88.70 89.40 88.36

Notes and recommendations:
Input line speed for RWIN recommendation
Looking good

Notes and recommendations:
Good data stream (no/few rexmits)
2+ second stall detected (FAQ #1606)

Notes and recommendations:
Looking good

Note i have set MTU at 1500 in my Netgear RP614 R.3 router and haven't started playing with DR TCP today and when i got fed up last night i reset all the DR TCP setting back to default...

Re: MTU setting

I'll start with the speed at 1000 and see what i get but do i enter the values of the tweakable settings in DR TCP i.e

1. Your Tweakable Settings:
Receive Window (RWIN): 65535
Window Scaling: off
Path MTU Discovery: ON
RFC1323 Window Scaling: OFF
RFC1323 Time Stamping: OFF
Selective Acks: ON
MSS requested: 1460
TTL:131
(less any hops behind firewall)
TTL remaining: 120
TOS/TOS subfield: 0
TOS/Flags:

So do i change the the values printed in bold type or is it more trial and error ?...

BTW thanks for all yr help man and the timely responses...

either you have just left school or are bored at work or LIKE ME you are unemployed lmao either way thanks man...

---------- Post added at 11:46 ---------- Previous post was at 11:45 ----------

Re: MTU setting

As to the original problem, I would assume that the problem is congestion in your area/cabinet.
Ring NTL to see if they can help with info.
I hope you can get it sorted.

Try my setting to see if it helps.
