Which "lead"? The Coaxial or the Ethernet?

It's the lead that goes from the modem to the PC. Has a sort of telephone like plug on each end.
Thanks

Re: Faulty Modem lead
That's an ethernet lead. You're looking for a cat5 lead - anywhere that does computer stuff should have them, even Dixon's etc.
Alternatively, any online supplier also should. Just try your favourite/most local.
Or just try Dabs .
Having said that, what makes you say the lead has an intermittent fault, Mike?

Re: Faulty Modem lead
Could be a solder joint in the modem or the lead itself cuold be faulty. Get a replacement patch cable from Maplins, Dabs, PC World, Tesco etc and see if it improves. If it doesn't improve it may be that the modem has developed a faulty connection.

Re: Faulty Modem lead
Sounds like it: that's cat5 cable. It should have RJ-45 connectors. Make sure it's a patch cable and not a crossover. That's about it.

patch is wired 'straight through' - i.e. in to in , out to out, crossover is wired 'crossed over', i.e. in to out & out to in (in essence)

Re: Faulty Modem lead
Thanks, Gaz! :-) And you generally use crossover cables for connecting a computer directly to another computer, and a patch cable for connecting a computer to anything else - i.e. router/switch etc.

np Patrick just to add that the more recent NTL cable modems can 'allegedly' (in that I havn't tried) use either a patch or a crossover cat5 cable.

Re: Faulty Modem lead
Yes, I think a lot of more modern network devices (routers, switches etc) can sense whether a cable is patch or crossover and switch connections accordingly. But

has AFAIK always been the distinction.
