Re: Worrying story
Getting struck by lightning is worrying too, but not very likely.

Re: Worrying story
Not really the fire could of started in a number of ways, overloading the socket, not using correct power supply for box, damage whilst moving it, not well ventilated.
The report doesn't say how it was started.

No it doesn't say that, but it still worryng to think these things can catch fire, especially if you're away on holiday. Kabaal, your post is not really called for. I was just commenting on a news story

Re: Worrying story
Can I suggest a mod moves this to another section and removes the "V+" flag? This clearly isn't a VM box as there is no cable in Holyhead.
The lightning comment might actually quite pertinent, if the aerial or dish got struck.

Re: Worrying story
However, a hint to the cause of the fire may have been in the Fire Officer's comment.

Mr Hughes added that to prevent a fire TV equipment should not be stacked, should not be put in enclosed cupboards and should be kept away from combustible materials

Unfortunately, ANY electrical device can catch fire, for many reasons.
Digital STBs tend to generate a lot of heat when working. A situation made worse by the fact they tend to come in relatively small cases (small case = little air inside the box = high temperature). A lot of people compound that problem by stuffing the box into a small hole with little or no space around it.
It is worrying to think that these things can catch fire, but how much equipment do you need left on if you are on holiday? If you don't have fish or an alarm system, you probably only need to leave the Fridge on, together with your freezer (if you have one). If you are planning to record TV to watch when you get home, leave your Digital STB on, but make sure it's well ventilated. The second bonus, if your family is anything like mine, is that with nearly everything turned off, you might save a decent chunk of the cost of the holiday.
